Father: ANDREW CANT II

Family 1 :
  1. +David MCCANTS Sr. "the Immigrant"
  2.  William MCCANTS
  3. +James MCCANTS

Notes

Exact relationship cannot be proven to David, therefore his record of parents is a hypothesis of the research by several in my McCants family.

"In 1689 William III of Orange, and Mary became the rulers of England. The Protestants in Ulster, N. IRE supported them and to this day are called Orangemen.
Andrew Cant, III, minister of Trinity College Church, Edinburg did not conform to the edict for all ministers throughout the land to pray for the new king and queen. A record was made on 27th April 1689 that Andrew Cant did not follow the edict on the specified Sunday and was therefore deprived of his pulpit."

"The Presbyterianism of the Scots settlers made them dissenters in Ireland, bringing disabilities and even mild persecution - their services of worship, church courts and marriages were deemed illegal, and they had to pay tithes and church rates to support the Protestant established church - and this experience injected bitterness into a people already hard.

Although many of the first Scottish settlers were killed or driven away in the Irish rebellion of l64l - though nothing like the 50,000 which contemporary propagandists claimed - their numbers were more than replenished by later waves of immigration, particularly after the Williamite victory of 1690. Londonderry rivalled Carrickfergus and Donaghadee as a port of entry. The Foyle basin, known as 'The Laggan', embracing north-west Tyrone and east Donegal, became, with Antrim and Down, the chief areas of Scottish settlement. It is difficult to be precise about numbers; contemporary statistics tend to be overestimates. The combined English and Scots population in the census of 1659 was 40,000. It has been estimated that another 50,000 Scots settled in Ulster during the remainder of the seventeenth century.

Their Presbyterianism kept their links with Scotland alive and strong. Until higher education became available in Belfast in the nineteenth century and they established their own theological colleges in Belfast and Londonderry, their ministers were trained in the Scottish universities. The close links between Irish Presbyterians and their mother church in Scotland led to the appearance in Ireland of the great divisions in Scottish Presbyterianism. Seceders of different kinds and Covenanters, who believed that the great Covenants of the seventeenth century were permanently binding contracts with God and could not be modified or set aside, found support in Ireland." http://www.irelandseye.com/irish/people/settlers/scots4.shtm

Our McCants family in SC were Aulds Presbyterian, Covenaters from County Down, IRE.

ROBERT FLEMING

ABT 1240 - ____

ID Number: I65870

  • RESIDENCE: SCT
  • BIRTH: ABT 1240, Scotland
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2485] [S3781]
Father: BALDWIN "the Fleming" of Biggar

Family 1 :
  1. +PATRICK FLEMING of Biggar

Notes

Spouse unknown.

It has not been sufficiently understood that the wars of the Scottish succession were intimately concerned with an insistence by the Boulonnais there that their own blood should continue on the throne. For Flemings had married Flemings and by now south and east Scotland was largely populated by men and women whose ancestors had come from Gent, Guines, Ardres, Comines, St Omer, St Pol, Hesdin, Lille, Tournai, Douai, Bethune, Boulogne. The 1290 break in the Scottish-Boulonnais succession provided the English monarchy with a heaven-sent opportunity to annul the Charlemagnic descent. Stepping in as friend and mediator, Edward I flung his armed weight behind John Baliol - a man who, although undoubtedly a Fleming, was not descended in the male line from the old comital house of the Eustaces. Nor has it been properly appreciated that the Ragman Rolls of the 1290s, by which an allegiance to Edward I had to be sworn by men described by later historians as “Scottish nobles”, were simply lists of important people of Flemish ancestry wherever they might be found; in fact many of the names are recognisable as belonging to Boulonnais living in the East Midlands, among them the Seatons of Rutland and descendants of the Lincolnshire Gilbert of Ghent.
