John had eight in his family in 1783. He furnished 300 lbs. of beef for the army on July 24, 1781. [Source: Amherst Public Service Claims, p. 13].

In 1783, he is shown as having eight whites and three blacks in his household. In the Amherst County 1785 Census he is shown head of the family, having 8 white souls living at the residence? One dwelling is shown with no other buildings. [Source: ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/amherst/census/1785cens.txt)

Old Terisha bequeathed him 519 acres on Fry's Branch in Amherst (already in his possession) along with three Negroes, Phebe, Lewis or Levi and Sarah. [Source: Amherst Will Book 4:34]

"On March 6, 1802 in Amherst County, John and his wife, Milley, sold 622 1/3 acres of land on Parridge Creek to Rich. Jones for 800 pounds [Amherst County, Virginia, Deed Book I, page 364]. The land was bounded by the lands of Joseph Higginbotham, John Nichols, Charles Munday, William Turner, Joseph Nichols, Daniel Day and John Mounce. The original deed was delivered to Rich. Jones on September 24, 1804. It is presumed that the land he inherited from his father was included in this tract. Although Milley signed the deed along with John, she did not specifically state her dower release of the land.

On February 11, 1803, John Turner served as bondsman in Sumner County when his daughter Polly married William Read. On September 10, 1803, John bought 164 acres of land from Moses Tinsley for $500. The witnesses were his sons, James Turner and Terisha Turner [Sumner County, Tennessee Deed Book 3, page 403]. Although no creek was given in the deed, this land is believed to have been located on the waters of Rocky Creeek. It is not clear what happened to the land. John apparently did not retain title to it, although no deed of sale has thus far been recorded.

On September 24, 1804, Amherst County, Commonwealth of Virginia, directed the justices of Sumner County, Tennessee to obtain relinquishment of Milley Turner on the deed dated March 6, 1802. On December 5, 1804, the justices declared that they examined Milley Turner apart from her husband John Turner and she agreed to the sale of the land.

On December 21, 1804, John bought 300 acres of land on Rocky Creek from James Sanders [Sumner County, Tennessee Deed Book 3, page 500]. The land was further described as beginning on the creek at an elm in Goodrum's line. This is the land where John Turner lived.

On October 15, 1807, John Turner bought 100 acres of land on the west fork of Goose Creek from John and Peter Lyons [Sumner County, Tennessee Deed Book 4, page 296]. Goose Creek is located east of the land on Rocky Creek. His total land holdings at this point were 564 acres. On June 11, 1812, John sold this particular tract of 100 acres to his son-in-law, William Read [Sumner County, Tennessee Deed Book 6, page 179-180]. John sold 155 acres of land on June 11, 1812 to his beloved son, Terisha Turner. The land was identified as part of the tract on which John then lived [Sumner County, Tennessee Deed Book 6, page 177-178]. Plats drawn of this land indicate that John sold Terisha the top portion of his 300 acre tract.

In 1817 and 1818, John paid tax on 150 acres on Rocky Creek in Sumner County which would appear to be the remainder of the 300 acres tract, but he paid no poll tax. He was at that time too aged to pay a poll tax. In 1819, John and his sons, Terisha and James, were taxed side by side on land on Rocky Creek.

In 1820 there were three households enumerated in the Census headed by a man named John Turner. The household of interest appears to be enumerated as John Turner Sr. This man was over 45 years of age and there were two females living with him, one also over 45 years and another aged 10 to 16. Living nearby were his sons, James, William S. and Terisha.

However, how do we explain the 1820 household of Milly Turner in Sumner County. She was over 45 years of age and lived alone. Next to her was the household of Charles Turner. Although some have said that John must have died by 1820 (Reliques of the Rives, for example) because his widow, Milly, was enumerated in the 1820 census of Sumner County, the tax records would tend to dispute this theory.
John Turner was taxed on 449 acres on Rocky Creek in 1821, seven slaves and no white poll. If the original tract of 164 acres was included in his land holdings, he would still only own 309 acres of land. If this tax record was for a son John, then a poll tax should have been paid.

On March 31, 1826, a John Turner purchased 162 acres of land in a deed of trust from James D. Edwon and John Spain. The land was on Booker's Creek and mentioned the bank of Rocky Creek in the deed. Witnesses were J. G. Turner and James Adams [Sumner County Deed Book 11, page 393]. By drawing the plat of this land, it is clear that the land comprised the bottom half of John's 1804 land purchase of 300 acres. No further deeds have been bound to explain the land holdings of John Turner.

It is believed, not no proven, that John Turner died in Sumner county after March of 1826, still owning land in Sumner County. It is not clear whether he died by 1830, but that year there were two John Turner households whose heads were quite elderly. One of these was the one who left a Will in 1835.

William S. Turner and Terisha Turner were both identified in a lawsuit as brothers of James Turner, husband of Nancy Goodrum [Sumner County, Tennessee Loose Lawsuit #13221, Nelly Goodrum vs. Robert & Susan Mills].

The above deed thus proves the children of John and Mildred (Suddarth) Turner. There is a discrepancy between Roskey, SWilson, and other sources regarding dates of birth and death for John, although the differences are not great." [Source: an email dated June 13, 1999 from Nat Turner to Terri Chesney regarding his research, passed to Toby Turner on October 22, 2000]

A John Turner is enumerated in 1790 Census in Warren County, North Carolina near Stephen Reuben Turner. He is shown as having one other male above 16, but no other whites are shown on the image. 39 other individuals and 41 slaves are shown. [1790 Census, Roll M637_7, Image 0054]"
