King FREDERICK I von WURTTEMBERG of Württemberg

6 Nov 1754 - 30 Oct 1816

ID Number: I95387

  • TITLE: King
  • RESIDENCE: Germany
  • BIRTH: 6 Nov 1754
  • DEATH: 30 Oct 1816
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3444]

Family 1 : AUGUSTE CAROLINE Friederike Luise von BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL
  1.  CATHARINA FREDERICA von WUTTEMBERG of Wurtemberg

Notes

Friedrich I of Württemberg, (often spelled Wurttemberg in English) refers to an area and a former state in Swabia, a region in south-western Germany.

Württemberg, once a Grand Duchy, became a Kingdom after the implosion of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, during the reign of Frederick I of Württemberg, and finally a Republic in 1918. After the Federal Republic of Germany was composed in 1949, Württemberg in 1952 merged with Baden to become the German Bundesland of Baden-Württemberg.

He became Duke of Württemberg in 1797 on the death of his father: he assumed the title of Elector in 1802, and the title of King in 1806.

He was obese: behind his back he was known as "The Great Belly-Gerent", and Napoleon Bonaparte later remarked that God had created the Prince to demonstrate the utmost extent to which the human skin could be stretched without bursting.
