John GARNETT I

1625 - AFT Apr 1703

ID Number: I63257

  • RESIDENCE: Elizabeth City, Gloucester and Essex Cos. VA
  • BIRTH: 1625, Elizabeth City, Virginia
  • DEATH: AFT Apr 1703
  • RESOURCES: See: notes [S1615] [S2753]
Father: Thomas GARNETT "the immigrant"
Mother: Elizabeth

Family 1 :
  1. +John GARNETT II

Notes

John Garnett Birth: 1625-- , Elizabeth City, VA Death: April 1703 -- Spouse: ? Parents: Thomas Garnett.

"John GARNETT is the earliest GARNETT from whom a direct descent can be traced for the GARNETTs of colonial Virginia. He is thought to have been the son of an earlier John GARNETT and it is assumed that he was born in Elizabeth City. The date of his birth in some sources has been placed as early as 1648 and as late as 1652.

John GARNETT moved to Gloucester County in about 1669. To this John GARNETT was granted 260 acres of land lying on the south side of Garden Creek in Gloucester County by the Governor Thomas Lord Culpeper on April 16, 1683. The grant of land lay between the property of John Smither and John Digges [Grant Book 7, page 239]. Some 180 acres had been purchased by John GARNETT from Humphrey Roy on June 15, 1676 and the remaining 80 acres were given to him for transporting at his own cost into the Colony two persons, Elizabeth Tindal and Thomas Combs.

In the Order Book of 1692-1695, on page 84, for Essex County there is recorded a deed by John Baker of Kingston Parish, Gloucester County to John GARNETT of said Parish and County, a planter. By this deed, John Baker conveys to John Garnett 600 acres of land in Essex County. This land transfer indicates that John Garnett had been one of the lucky ones to survive a very difficult period in the history of the Virginia colony and had become one of the most prosperous planters of this early era.

In the Quit Rent Roll of Gloucester in 1704, John GARNETT is listed as owning 250 acres.

In a deed of June 8, 1709, recorded in the Essex County Deed Book Number 13, page 225, the grantor, Thomas GARNETT of St. Anne's Parish, Essex, planter, is described as "one of the sons and devisees of John GARNETT, late of the Parish of Kingston, in the county of Gloucester" In consideration of the 3,500 pounds of tobacco Thomas Garnett conveys unto John Foster, 50 acres of land on the south side of the Rapphannock River, being part of the tract of 600 acres purchased by John GARNETT, deceased, from John Barker, lying on the Rappahannock River near Moseley's Quarter and more particularly the said Thomas Garnett's share of the 150 acres which John GARNETT had by his last will, dated November 12, 1703, given to his son, Anthony GARNETT, who having died before he attained the age of twenty-one years, his share did then by right belongs to the surviving children of the said John GARNETT, of which the share of Thomas GARNETT was the 50 acres therein conveyed. The deed is witnessed by Salvator Muscoe and William Taylor.

John GARNETT appears to have had four children: John, Thomas, and Anthony who died young, and another, probably a daughter, whose name is not known. Thomas GARNETT who made the deed of June 8, 1709, moved from Gloucester in Essex and took up his residence in St. Anne's Parish.

So it is evident from the Deed Records of Virginia that this John GARNETT must have had three sons, the eldest son being also named John GARNETT and subsequently fathering a large and prominent family of GARNETTs centering around Essex County, Virginia.

His second son, Thomas GARNETTwas born in Kingston Parish, Gloucester County and died in St. Anne's Parish, Essex County---he also fathered a large and prominent family of GARNETT descendants.

The third son, Anthony GARNETT must have died before reaching the age of 21.

There was also probably a daughter [her name is not yet known for certain] who eventually married William TAYLOR. [This could be the same William Taylor ---or a related one--- who served as a witness in the land deed of June 8, 1709 for the GARNETT family.

A later daughter of William TAYLOR and this GARNETT daughter married a grandson of this same John GARNETT. Marriages between first or second cousins was a fairly common occurrence in those days.

From a manuscript of Esther Garnett Bybee which can be found in the D.A.R. Library, there is more evidence of the connection between John GARNETT and the earlier Thomas GARNETT who first settled in the Virginia colony.

The will of Thomas GARNETT has not yet been located and most of the Elizabeth City County, Virginia records were destroyed by fire, but the land grants to Thomas GARNETT in Elizabeth City and to John GARNETT in Gloucester County with dates, the repetition of names, and other factors have furnished acceptable proof of relationship between Thomas the emigrant and John GARNETT of Gloucester County for our best genealogists and for such organizations as "The Order of the First Families of Virginia" and "Colonial Dames".

An excerpt from a letter written October 21, 1937 by Mr. Robert A. Stewart of Richmond, Virginia [a genealogist] says:

"Through my investigation for Miss Tebo, I have come to the conclusion that Thomas GARNETT who came to Virginia in 1610 and hence as an 'Historical Founder' would be considered 'Eligibility' by the Virginia Society, is the father of John GARNETT who appears late in the records and the grandfatehr of John GARNETT of Gloucester County, Virginia from whom Miss Tebo's line is fully established. The early Gloucester County records are missing, but I think the link between John of Gloucester and the early Thomas may on reasonable grounds be accepted.

Virgina Magazine of History, v. 43, p. 69-71; The Garnett's of Albemarle County Virginia; LDS "Family Genealogies" #496-518; History of Caroline County, Will dated November 12, 1703, probably in Essex County Virginia; Governor Thomas Culpepper granted John Garnett 260 acres on the south side of Garden Creek, Gloucester County, Virginia, Grant Book #7, p 269. John had 600 acres at the time of his death, divided by his three living children. The land was on the south side of the Rappahanock River. John lived in Kingston Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia, in 1683. He lived in Essex County, Virginia in 1692. He was "of age" to buy land by 1676, making his birth about 1655, probably in Virginia.
