King ERC of Dal Riada

ABT 0360 - ____

ID Number: I51230

Father: FOGHAN OWEN

Family 1 :
  1.  LOARN macErc of Dal Riada
  2. +FERGUS macErc of Dal Riada
  3.  ANGUS macErc of Dal Riada

Notes

"The Scottish Monarchy originates from the Irish people. Over 1000 years ago the House of Alpin, with their harsh rule forged the path that became Scotland. As for the exact dates regarding the births, deaths and periods of rule concerning the following, most are taken from folklore - legend - and/or historical record. What with civil unrest, war and failure to keep accurate records, some dates are probably best left to be argued by historians."

Muredach, b. ABT 363.

There is a legendary ancestry of his son back to Old King Cole, to the first Christian King of Ireland in the third century, to Milesius of Spain and his wife Scota (daughter of Pharaoh Nectanebus of Egypt, and to Noah's son Japhet {"Royal Ancestors of Magna Charta Barons," Carr P. Collins, Jr., Dallas, 1959, pp. 145-47, 150-55.} We know that of Erc's sons Loarn, Fergus and Angus settled Dalriada (Argyle) in Scotland in 496 {"Royal Ancestors of Sixty New England Colonists," Frederick L. Weis, Lancaster, Mass., 1950, p. 132}.

From: "Cox, Jeff" cox_je@leg.wa.gov To: "'Josephine Lindsay Bass'" jbass@digital.net Subject: RE: FW: Gatewoods Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1998

My stuff is all on paper, I haven't yet transcribed it to an internet file. Let me do that and send you Cox info. later.

Basically, though, this will outlines most of the early info. we have on William, although I am collecting information on his father Matthew (1660-1685) died Goochland Co. and I there are strong indicators (location of property) that Matthew (1660) had two brothers John and William and a father William who purchased land on the south side of the James River between Charles City and Richmond in 1628 and 1637. However, I am still collecting much of this information.

With regard to John Gatewood. It appears to me that he had two wifes, one of which died relatively young. I don't know which was first Frances or Catherine.

Regards, Jeff

Notes

7. Burrell b 1820; Burrell Fortenberry b 1820 in MS. the son of William Jasper Fortenberry b 1772-1774 and Violette Kennington b 1786. Burrell's brother was Gasua Chapman Forteberry.

Burrell Taylor Fortenberry was born in the latter part of 1820. He was the first child born to William and Violette [Kennington] Forentberry after they arrived in Mississippi.
On August 15, 1850, Burrell married Eliza Jane Ellzey, the daughter of John Shaffer and Elizabeth [Coney] Ellzey. Eliza Jane was born on September 5, 1830, and died April 4, 1899. It is not known where she is buried.

Burrell applied for unoccupied federal land in Pike County, Mississippi. This land consisted of the south half of the SW 1/4, sectin 34, township 1, range 9, East, containing eighty acres, more or less. This land was deeded to him on August 1, 1853 [Volume 15, page 344, Department of the Interior, Eastern States Office, Silver Spring, Maryland]; this is where Burrell and Eliza built their home.

On August 9, 1862, Burrell enlisted in the Quinn's Mississippi State Troops, Company H, as a private. On December 20, 1862, Burrell was transferred to the Confederate Service. Because Mississippi State Troops were not allowed, by law, to fight out of state, the Confederate government would transfer men from State Troops to Confederate Regiments in order to add men when needed. In Confederate service, Burrell was a private in Company K, 9th Louisiana Cavalry [Wingfield's]. In the same regiment, but in different companies were his nephews, W. F. Fortenberry [Company C] and W. J. Fortenberry [Company A].

[1] According to the Confederate Records in the National Archives, Burrell served during the siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana. The siege began on May 25, 1863 and lasted until they surrendered on July 9, 1863.

[2] Accounts of the siege of Port Hudson lead a reader to believe that conditions there were deplorable. After the surrender, Burrell was paroled and allowed to return home. His condition at the time of surrender is not known; however, he died less than ten weeks after leaving Port Hudson. In a journal kept by Ferman Esco Fortenberry, Burrell's grandson, it is written that his grandfather died in 1863 from 'Exposure in War'. It is not known whether he died from wounds he received, starvation, or disease. Though research has not discovered his cause of death, an exact date of death has been located. Much to our good fortune, Gasua, Burrell's brother, recorded in a small Bible the following:

B.T. Fortinberry Departed this Life September 14th 1863

Burrell is buried in a grave marked by a large stone in a cemetery that was on Gasua's property. A marker from the Veteran's Administration was placed on Burrell's grave by the authors in 1977. This cemetery is called the Fortenberry Cemetery and is located one mile south of the Silver Springs Baptist Church.

nelda zbranek Email: bayoublanc@imsday.com 11/24/00: My information shows that Batson Morgan may be the father of Rachel Lacy Morgan, her mother being Elizabeth Waddell. Also that Batson's father was M. Morgan. Is this M. for first name Morgan, for instance, is Batson's father Morgan Morgan? Also who was M. Morgan's wife? Batson Morgan and Elizabeth Waddell were residents of Darlington County, S.C. Many thanks, Nelda
