"IGI p. 255 for Denbigh Wales; According to an article in "Old Homes and Families of King William County, Virginia", by Peyton Neale Clark, 1897, John Edwards, Sr. settled in Virginia and named the family plantation "Cherry Grove.""

"COMPILATION:Dr. G.M.G. Stafford, Baton Rouge, Louisiana "The King Family" p.4-5 "The Edward
s family was one of the most prominent among the early pioneers who settled this country. Before crossing the ocean to the wilds of america they had been in Denbigh, Wales for many centuries. They can easily be traced back to Sir John Griffith Lloyd, a direct descendant of Roderick the Great, King of Wales in 824. Richard Edwards of Denbigh had four sons: Richard, William, John and Thomas. Richard, the eldest of these, left Wales during the reign of Queen Elizabeth and settled in Chester, England, where he was a minister of the established church. He later removed to Lond and at the time of his death was prelate of the queen. His son, Thomas, was knighted by royal decree in 1624. This Sir Thomas Edwads had five sons: William, John, Thomas, Robert, and Edmund. The eldest, William Edwards (1620-1685), came to America with his mother and step-father, John Cole, of London, and settled in Hartford, Connecticut (1639), where he married and left numerous descendants, thus establishing the well known family of that name in New England. John, Richard, William and Thomas Edwards, grandsons of Richard of Wales, came to Virginia, and John, the eldest, settled in Northumberland county. His son, John Edwards, Jr., was a vestryman in Lancaster county, and then removed to Surry county where he was a burgess. He married Frances Cole and their son, William Edwards, member of the House of Burgesses in 1653, lived in Surry county and married Dorothy Withers. Among their children was William Edwards, Jr., also a burgess from Surry, who married Ann Harrison, daughter of Col. Benjamin Harrison, the "Councillor" (progenitor of two Presidents of the United States), and they were the parents of John Edwards who married Jane Arrington. This latter couple lived in Prince William County and later moved to Spotsylvania county. John Edwards was a cptain in the colonial militia and was with the First Virginia Regiment in the French and Indian War. His wife, Jane Arrington was a daughter of Thomas Arrington of Westmoreland county."

From History of Albemarle County, in Virginia By Rev. Edgar Woods, p. 220: "Benjamin (Harris) was a man of great wealth, was appointed magistrate in 1791 and served as Sheriff in 1815. He married Mary, daughter of Samuel Woods, and had eleven children. Among them were Dr. William A., who married his cousin Elizabeth, daughter of Schuyler Harris, was magistrate of the county and ruling elder in the Cove Church and in 1837 removed to Illinois; and Colonel George W., who died in 1877, and whose children still occupy the old homestead on the old Irish Road, west of Porter's Precinct. [There is a populated place named Porter on Rte 6 between Scottsville and the Green Creek area.]

From Evelyn Beckham Mondy's DAR appl.: Benajmin Harris entered the Revolutionary Army in 1775 at 21. First served as Private, then Corporal in the Va. Continental Line. In 1779 he was promoted to Capt. and held this office until 1782. From the record of the Bureau of Pensions, Wash. D.C., we learn that he was in the Seige of York.

In Edwards' Memorial Sketch, p. 9 it is stated Capt. Harris was at Yorktown at the surrender of Cornwallis and was frequently in the society of Gen. Washington while engaged in military svc. For Washington he formed a strong personal attachment. His admiration of the chieftains exalted charcater was unbounded.

The name of Benjamin Harris appears in a Dec. of Independence signed by the citizens of Albemarle Co. Va April 21, 1779, the original of which is preserved in the Va. Historical Society, Richmond, VA.

In May 1781 when it was rumored that the British were on their way to Richmond Va, there was a call for a great many men from Albemarle Co. and many companies went into service, Capt. Benjamin Harris being one (McAllisters History of Va. Militia in the Revolutionary War, p. 106.

Many dates of births, deaths and marriages came from Benjamin Harris and Mary Woods Harris' family bible in possession of their grandson, Melville Harris, who owns the ancestral estate in Albemarle Co, VA. Patented by Wm. Harris in 1741.

named in Will of WILLIAM HARRIS, dated Oct. 26, 1788.
