RICHARD STOCKTON, “The Duke,” of Princeton, New Jersey; b. 17th April, 1764, at “Morven;” d. 7th March, 1828; Lawyer; graduated from the College of New Jersey, Princeton; A.B., 1779; A.M., 1782; studied law under his uncle Dr. Elias BOUDINOT; admitted to the Bar, 1784, and commenced practice at Princeton. Presidential Elector on the WASHINGTON and ADAMS ticket, 1792 and 1801; elected by the Federalists as United States Senator from New Jersey to fill vacancy caused by resignation of Frederick FREYLINGHUYSEN, 1796-1799, when he declined reelection. Member of Congress (House of Representatives), 1813-1815; was again Presidential Elector in 1801 on the ADAMS and PINCKNEY and a member of the State Legislature, 1813-1815. Was made Trustee of the College of New Jersey, 1791-1828, and received the honorary degree of LL.D. from Queen's (now Rutgers) College, New Brunswick, New Jersey, 1815, and from Union College, Schenectady, New York, 1816; m. Mary FIELD, b. 10th October, 1776, d. 25th December, 1837, dau. of Robert and Mary (PEALE) FIELD and sister of Robert FIELD who m. Abigail STOCKTON, sister of The Duke."
