Cadwallon ap Cadfan the exiled king of Gwynedd, Cadwallon ap Cadfan Cadwallon ap Cadfan (c. 591 - 634) was a King of Gwynedd (c. 625 - 634). He was the son of Cadfan ap Iago.

was a King of Gwynedd Gwynedd was one of the kingdoms or principalities of medieval Wales. Covering an area in the north-west of the country around Snowdonia and including the island of Anglesey, its rulers—such as Owain Gwynedd, Llywelyn the Great and Llywelyn the Last—tended to gain the ascendancy over their rivals. The region's geography made it difficult for English kings to impose their will on the local rulers.

Cadwallon became king upon his father's death around the year 625. It was probably not long afterward that Edwin of Northumbria Edwin (alternately Eadwine or Æduini) (c. 584 - October 12, 633) was a King of Northumbria (616 - 633). He was the son of Aella of Deira and the brother of Aethelric of Deira. The name "Eadwine" is Old English for "wealthy friend".

Around the year 604, upon the seizure of Deira by his brother-in-law, Æthelfrith of Bernicia, Edwin was expelled and took refuge and launched an offensive against Gwynedd and invaded Anglesey

Anglesey (Welsh: Ynys Môn), is an island and county off the northwest coast of Wales. It is separated from the mainland by a narrow stretch of water called the Menai Strait.

Cadwallon was defeated and forced to flee to Priestholm (a small island off eastern Anglesey), where he was besieged by Edwin, and then to Ireland and finally to Brittany Région Bretagne.

Cadwallon subsequently led an army into Dumnonia The Dumnonii is the Latin name for a Celtic tribe which emerged in the wake of the Roman withdrawal from England during the 4th century AD.

Their territory spanned Somerset, Devon and Cornwall with further holdings in Dorset. They were possibly the most powerful of all the British Celtic tribes. It is also possible that the Dumnonii held some Breton land at some point. The name of Dumnonia in Celtic is Dunein or Dyfneint. The kingdom is called Kernyw in Welsh.

There he encountered the Mercians Mercia, sometimes spelled Mierce , was one of the kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxon heptarchy, in what is now England, in the region of the Midlands, with its heart in the valley of the Trent and its tributary streams. Mercia's neighbors included Northumbria, Powys, the kingdoms of southern Wales, Wessex, Sussex, Essex, and East Anglia. The name survives today in the name of West Mercia Constabulary.
who were besieging Exeter and entered into an alliance with their king, Penda Penda (d. November 15, 655) was a King of Mercia (c. 626 - 655). He was one of the most powerful of the early Anglo-Saxon kings.

He subsequently regained Gwynedd with a victory at Long Mountain and, with Penda (whose sister Cadwallon married), marched on into Northumbria

Northumbria was one of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in England, named from lying north of the River Humber. It was one of the heptarchy. The name survives in some uses as an alternative description for North East England.

History
Northumbria was originally composed of the union of two independent kingdoms, Bernicia and Deira. It stretched from the Humber to the Firth of Forth and included Edinburgh as one of its cities. The northern half of the kingdom was ceded to the new kingdom of Scotland after a Northumbrian defeat in the 9th century. The links between Northumbria and Scotland are clearly visible today in the dialect of the latter, which includes many Old English words, such as 'Bairn' for 'Child'.
The war that followed culminated in a battle at Hatfield Chase The Battle of Hatfield Chase was fought in Anglo-Saxon England between the Northumbrians under Edwin and the allied Welsh of Gwynedd under Cadwallon ap Cadfan and Mercians under Penda. It took place on October 12, 633 and was a decisive victory for the Welsh and Mercians: Edwin was killed and his army was destroyed.

Edwin had conquered Gwynedd a few years before the battle and driven Cadwallon into exile. When the latter returned to Britain, he forged an alliance with Penda, who was then undertaking a siege of Exeter in Dumnonia, and together they recaptured Gwynedd from the Northumbrians. They then invaded Northumbria itself, and the two sides met at Hatfield Chase, north of Doncaster.

which ended in the defeat and death of Edwin. After this, the Kingdom of Northumbria fell into disarray, divided between its sub-kingdoms of Deira Deira (from Brythonic Deifr, meaning "waters") was a kingdom in England during the 6th century AD. It later merged with the kingdom of Bernicia (Brythonic, Brynaich) to the north to form the kingdom of Northumbria.
According to Simeon of Durham it extended from the Humber to the Tyne, but the land was waste north of the Tees. York was the capital of its kings.

The date of its first settlement is quite unknown, but the first king of whom we have any record is Ælla, who flourished in the later 6th century. After his death, Deira was subject to king Æthelfrith of Bernicia, who united the two kingdoms into Northumbria. Æthelfrith ruled until the accession of Ælla's son Edwin, in 616 or 617, who also ruled both kingdoms till 633.

and Bernicia Bernicia (Brythonic, "Brynaich") was a kingdom of the Angles in northern England during the 6th and 7th centuries AD. It later merged with the kingdom of Deira to form the kingdom of Northumbria.

Its territory is said to have stretched from the Tyne northwards, ultimately reaching the Firth of Forth, while its western frontier was gradually extended westward, encroaching on the Cumbric speaking kingdoms of Rheged, Gododdin and Dunbarton.
and Cadwallon exploited the situation by continuing to raid and ravage the country, although without the participation of Penda. He captured York For articles about other uses of York, see York (disambiguation).

York is a city in the north of England built at the confluence of the Rivers Ouse and Foss. York is the traditional county town of Yorkshire, to which it lends its name.
and, when it was besieged by the king of Deira, Osric Osric (d. 634) was a King of Deira (633-634) in northern England. He was a cousin of King Edwin of Northumbria: the son of Edwin's uncle Aelfric. Osric was also the father of Oswine.

After Edwin was killed in battle against Cadwallon ap Cadfan of Gwynedd and Penda of Mercia, Northumbria fell into disarray, with Eanfrith taking power in the sub-kingdom of Bernicia and Osric taking power in Deira.
his forces broke out of the siege; Osric was killed. The king of Bernicia, Eanfrith Eanfrith (d. 634) was a King of Bernicia (633 - 634). He was the son of Aethelfrith.

Following the death of his father in battle against Raedwald of East Anglia, Edwin of Deira was installed by Raedwald as king of Northumbria. Eanfrith fled to the north and took refuge with the Picts. He married into the Pictish royal line and had a son, Talorcan, who later became a king of the Picts (653 - 657). Throughout his life, Eanfrith remained a pagan, unlike Edwin, who converted to Christianity in 627.
was also killed by Cadwallon after attempting to negotiate peace.

However, Cadwallon's army was exhausted and poorly prepared when it was confronted by an army under Eanfrith's successor in Bernicia, Oswald Oswald (c. 604 - August 5, 642) was a King of Northumbria (634 - 642). He was the son of Æthelfrith of Bernicia, King of Northumbria.

After his father's death and defeat in battle against Raedwald of East Anglia, Oswald fled to Dalriada, where he was converted to Christianity by the monks of Iona. In 629, he fought under Connadd Cerr in the Battle of Fid Eoin in Ireland.

After the Welsh at Heavenfield The Battle of Heavenfield was fought in 634 between a Northumbrian army under Oswald of Bernicia and a Welsh army under Cadwallon ap Cadfan of Gwynedd. It was a decisive Northumbrian victory.

Following the Battle of Hatfield Chase on October 12, 633, during which the Northumbrian king Edwin was killed by the invading Welsh and Mercians, Northumbria was split between its two sub-kingdoms, Bernicia and Deira, and exposed to the devastation of Cadwallon's invading army. The king of Bernicia, Eanfrith, was killed by Cadwallon after attempting to negotiate peace.
Cadwallon's army fled after a battle and he was killed.
