Notes from Linda Mahan email 11mahan@aol.com
According to John H. Gwathmey's "Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution",page 494 John Mahan served as Lieutenant from January 1777 to September 1778.

"Revolutionary War Records, Volume 1, Virginia" by Gaius Marcus Brumbaugh, 1936 states on page 134:

"Mahon, John, Lieutenant, Continental Line, appears to have been in service as lieutenant from Jan.1,1777 to Sept. 23,1778 a year and nearly nine months, there is no proof of his title to bounty land"

John Mahan is also listed in "A List of Non-commissioned officiers and Soldiers of the Virginia Line" 1835, page 82 (Doc. N.44)

John Mahan is also listed on several applications to the Daughters of the American Revolution. One of those applications was by Phalabelle Romer Martin. Another was by Gloria Newman Audd.

Re: Immigrant James Love descendants Posted by: Dr. B. G. Foster Date: May 21, 2000 at 09:51:16 In Reply to: Immigrant James Love descendants by Dr. Tom Love of 2079, this is not my Love line, however my Loves joined your Loves when Richard Love, son of James and Jennette Harrison Love married Elizabeth, daughter of Benjamin and Jane Gaston Love of Chester Co., SC. I differ in the descendants of James and Mattie in one important way. Since this is not my line I certainly will stand correcting. Here is how I differ. JOHN, son of James and Mattie Love, NOT JAMES, son of James and Jennette Harrison Love, were the parents of James and Janet Lockert Love. His (James who married Janet) siblings were: Wm m Marjory Lockhart, John m Millie Horton, Thomas, Robert, Joseph, Jane, Martha m Robert Elliott, and Sarah Love. John's wife was Martha Drennan and Captain James (their son) and Jane Lockert named a son Drennan Love who married Elizabeth Lovelace Cook. Bill

No, the immigrant, James, came through the port of Baltimore to settle first in Pennsylvania, then to South Carolina and a couple of generations later to Alabama. Jane Lockert was John Lockert Love's Mother. Faye McDonald, Chuck Lockert and Byron Parham are working on a book and data base for that family and I really have become acquainted with Faye. Notes

Some show her as Maud(Mahaut de Lacy) Lacy, dau of Gilbert De Lacy & Isabel Bigod.

"William had married Maud, the daughter of Sir John Fitz-Geoffrey whose lands were concentrated in Surrey and Essex, and was the widow of Sir Gerard de Furnivalle. Furnivalle died in 1261, and it would appear likely that she had married Earl William by the time of his accession as earl; their son Guy is described as ‘30 or more’ in 1301, placing his birth in 1271, and there is no reason at all to suppose that he was among the first born of William and Maud's seven children. In fact it would make sense for Maud to have married William soon after the death of her first husband, well before the succession to the Warwick inheritance had been determined. McFarlane refers to the Fitz-Geoffrey as a ‘very minor baronial house’, and it would seem likely that this marriage was at least arranged before the succession of the earldom of Warwick had been properly secured. The notion, sometimes put forward, that William married Maud for financial gain can also be dismissed. Maud is frequently referred to as an heiress; indeed she was one of four co-heiresses to the Fitz-Geoffrey estates after her brother died without issue in 1297. However it is most unlikely that this chance windfall had been a factor in the arrangement of their marriage thirty years previously.

Whatever the circumstances of the marriage, Earl William was clearly fond of his wife. Judging by his will, William does seem to have possessed a sentimental side; he requests that if he should die oversees, his heart be removed from his body and buried wherever his wife (‘his dear consort’) should choose to have herself interred, and their surviving son Guy was present when she was buried next to her husband. She certainly seems to have suffered from a disabling infirmity toward the end of her life which made travel impossible, but this does not appear to have been a hindrance earlier on, for they had seven children that we are aware of."
