From there they moved to Vermillion County Indiana near the town of Clinton. About twenty years later when his father Lewis became too ill to maintain his stewardship of his farm and tannery, Jacob and Sarah moved back to "Old Mansion" and took up the reins.

On 9 May 1837, Jacob was a passenger on the steamer "Ben Sherrod" that was captained by his son Christopher Greenup Castleman. While the steamer was enroute from New Orleans, LA to Louisville, KY the boiler exploded. He was among the casualties killed in the explosion."
