Notes

"Carneys are believed to have came through the MS Territory, up the Natchez Trace where we first find John, William and Elijah Carney on the l798 Sumner Co. Tax Rolls. William and Rebecca lived on Lt. Marrowbone Creek in NW Davidson Co. near the Cheatham Co. line. Found in 1790 North Carolina Census. John Carney of Craven County, with 2 Free Males 16 years or older (John and, 2 free males under 16, 4 free females any age, 13 slaves. Upon arriving in Tennessee, after opened up in 1800 for purchase of land on credit (1800-1820)

John Carney, (1748-1838), served as a private in Capt. John Peyton Harrison's company, 2nd Virginia Continental Line.

History of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, with Biographical Sketches of Many of its Pioneers and Prominent Men.

June Pollard, 6018 Sunrise Circle, Franklin, Tennessee 37067 - located an 1813 lawsuit in Davidson County, Tennessee re: the State of Tennessee against JOHN KERNEY, SR., JOHN KERNEY, JR. and ELIJAH KERNEY. Reference: Book - Davidson County, Tennessee County Court Minutes 1783 - 1792 by: Carol Wells page 31 - April 1785 Court Session - "John Boyd vs Ja. Rains. Trespass. Assault & Battery (page 127) Jury: John Cox, C. Ruddle, William Crutcher, John Buchanan, Jn. Tucker, Moses Larracy, Sam' Martin, Samuel Desson, JOHN KARNEY, Wm. Gower, Mark Nobles, Ed Hogan, Ed Hickman. Wit. Francis Armstrong, Wit. Wm. Crutcher. Def' came to plaintiff house picked up a chair, knocked plaintiff down, bit his thumb.

There was a JOHN KERNEY in the 1830 Davidson County, Tennessee Census 2 males - under 5 1 male - age 15/20 1 male - 80/90 1 female - under 5 1 female - age 15/20 1 female - age 20/30 1 female - age 60/70 1 female - age 80/90.

The Revolutionary War Pension List for West Tennessee in 1818 lists a John Carney, Private - N.C. The Militia Companies of Davidson County, Tennessee in 1812 list a John Carney.

John Carney bought land known as "Edward Blackburn's old place" on March 25, 1812 - 40 acres on Marrowbone June Pollard believes John eventually immigrated to Indian Territory...there is definitely a connection between this John Carney and the MS John Carney.....so many people get the John Carney in Sumner/Smith Cos. TN mixed with this TN John Carney - not the same person.

A John Carney born 15 Apr 1757 in Frederick, VA and died aft 1832 in Jennings City, Indiana MAY have a connection to my John Carney, but cannot be proven to date.

The Carney name is an alternative spelling of the original, O'Kearney. While O'Kearney is spread over the four green fields of Ireland, the spelling of the name Carney is almost confined to Connaught. They are a branch of the Ui Fiachrach whose territory was around Moynulla and Balla in County Mayo. In County Cavan the name was spelled McCarney. A townland in County Meath is called Ballymacarney. A branch of the Carney family from Carrigeencor, Bernie Cunningham, nee Gallagher settled in Nebraska USA. From the book Clans and Families of Ireland , by John Grenham, comes the following history of Irish surnames: By the 11th century many families had acquired true surnames as we know them today. All of these surnames incorporate the same two basic elements, "O" or "Mac", with the personal name of the ancestor from whom descent is indicated. In many cases this ancestor can be quite accurately identified, and the origin of the name dated precisely." In the book Irish Family Names, by Brian deBreffny, we find this entry under the name FOX ; "A small minority of Fox families in Ireland will be descended from the English settlers of that name. Most are of native Irish ancestry being from a forebearer who was designated by the sobriquet sionnach, meaning "the fox". The most famous of these was Tadhg (Teige) O'Catharnaigh, Chief of Teffia in County Meath in the latter half of the 11th century, who was known as Sionnach, and many of whose descendents came to be known as Sionnach instead of their sept (clan) name 'Catharnaigh, which was usually anglicised as O'Caherny, Carney and Kearney." Reading about the different name variations of O'Catharnaigh we find that the Carney sept moved to County Mayo, the Kearney sept to County Clare and County Tipperary and the Fox (Sionnach) sept to County Offaly."
