A History of Malboro Co. SC by J.A.W. Thomas in 1897, p. 26 c. 3: "The father of Judge Evans (Thomas Evans by name) married Elizabeth Hodge, sister of Capt. Geo Hodges of Lower Malboro, Marion Co. then called Liberty....Col. Geo Hodges m. Sarah, dau of George Cherry; Rebecca, dau of Old Tom Evans married Charles Irby."

The Estate records of Rebecca Hodges show admins John Hodges, Abel Waddell and Thomas Evans in 1789/1791, could be this Thomas Evans.

"The thing that really interests me about the following notes I have on John DANIEL is the reference to his having sold land to Thomas EVANS, as well as the various references to Marion, SC. There are two Thomas EVANS in that general area in that time frame. The only one that matches the profile
for the Thomas EVANS that would have been close to John DANIEL is the Thomas EVANS (1743-1800) of Cheraw District, now Marlboro, SC who was married to an Elizabeth HODGES.

I think someone has linked H. Thomas EVANS who married Jane DANIEL to the wrong family. I think the H. in EVANS's name may well have stood for Hodges Thomas EVANS and he was a son of Thomas EVANS and Elizabeth HODGES and not Nathan EVANS, II.

The reason I say this is because of the families that Thomas EVANS kids married into and the places they lived. Thomas EVANS is buried on Society HILL in Darlington, SC where the FURMANS were from. This is just conjecture on my part but the profile of this family matches very closely that of H.
Thomas EVANS, including the DANIELS, and his family. Also, notice the PEARSON name attached to the SC unit John was in during the RW.

There may be a whole bunch of convoluted and commingled families, here........"

"The Rev. J. A. W. Thomas in his History of Marlboro County, SC, mentions the first settlers of Welsh Baptists in 1736-7 who organized a Baptist church in Jan 1738. He said that "Old Col Tom"Evans lived on the road from Long Bluff to the Marlboro old Courthouse.

Dr. Wm. B. Hall, who did so much of this research, finally came to agree with Bp. Gregg that this Thomas was the great-grandson of the Thomas Evans who came to the Pedee.

Thomas Evans served during the Revolution as did his two brothers Josiah and John. He was a private in Hicks' Regiment, in Captain Edmund Irby's Company at the Siege of Charleston in 1780. Gregg says, "The first division of Col Hicks' Regiment, under the command of Lieut-Col. Kolb was on the march. The second division under Col. Hicks, moved in February 1780. Tristram Thomas was Major in this command, and John Andrews, Adjutant. Edmund Irby, Thomas Ellerbe, Stephen Jackson and Maurice Murphy commanded companies. Capt. James Gregg's company formed part of a detachment, under Major Thornby. They remained at the Ten mile House (near Charlestown] two months when their term of service expired. Just then Sir H. Clinton approached the city, when Major Thornby and other officers proposed to their men to volunteer for its defence. They did so unanimously, and marched in and remained in the city until the capitulation."

Endorsed on the wrapper by the Auditor General:749 Y 31 Decr. 85
Thomas Evans of Cheraws for 60 days Duty as a Private Soldier in Cap Edmund Irbys Company Col: Hicks Regt. in General McIntosh's Brigade at the Seige of Charleston in 1780, 10 p per day
four pound five shillings and eight pence, halfpenny

The Evans, Hicks and Irbys lived near each other in Marlborough and later Captain Irby's nephew married a daughter of Thomas Evans.

Enoch Evans, who was a first Lieut in Captain Irby's company, may have been another brother but there is no connection verifiable at the present, though certainly he was a relative.

There is also on record: "Evans, Capt. Thomas, services as Capt of Militia and 12 months due Lewis Roan for services in State troops and 1 hog L90.11.5 "Evans, Josiah for provision and forage and duty done in 1782, 1793. L8.9.6"

Thomas Evans and Josiah were brothers and the two items above and the one for Thomas Evans Sr. are found together in N.L. Cook's "Rambles in the Pedee Basin" in the chapter on Revolutionary claims for the Cheraws District, covering the counties of Chesterfield, Marlborough and Darlington. Josiah Evans was a private in 1781-82 in Benton's Regiment.

When the Revolution ended Thomas Evans became prominent in the affairs of Marlborough. By the action of the Legislature of 1785 delimiting Cheraws District into the three counties of Chesterfield, Marlborough and Darlington, Thomas Evans was among others appointed Justice of the Peace for Marlborough. The office of Justice was of high trust and much importance and only men of experience and unquestioned integrity were selected. During the eighties he became a member of St. David's Society as his father had been before him and he was a member after 1788. He was elected a representative from Marlborough for the Legislature of 1789. At the Convention of May 1790, meeting in Columbia, the Constitution was adopted on 3 June giving each of the three counties mentioned above two representatives and two senators for the three. Thomas Evans and John James Jones were elected representatives from Marlborough in the ensuing November, and at the meeting of the Legislature in January 1791 Thomas Evans was elected one of the Justices of Quorum and the Peace for Marlborough, as also one of the Commission for work on the Pedee River from the North Carolina line to Black Creek.

In 1795 the Legislature elected him County Judge for Marlborough in place of William Thomas, resigned. At this time the Militia of the State was divided into nine brigades, that of Cheraw being number nine consisting of three regiments, the 37th, th 38th, and the 39th. Thomas Evans was elected colonel of the 39th.

In 1799 he was appointed by the legislature one of the Commissioners for building and repairing the several Court Houses and gaols, with William Thomas, Tristram Thomas, Drury Robertson and Benjamin Rogers for Marlborough District instead of County as it had been previously termed.

Col Thomas Evans married Elizabeth Hodge or Hodges as the name was variously spelled. The date of marriage is not known, nor is the exact date of her death known, but she died very shortly after the birth of her youngest son Abel Edward Evans.

Col. Evans married on 25 March 1800 Mrs. Wilhelmina Amelia Charlott (de Poellnitz) Stewart, the daughter of Baron de Poellnitz, and died sometime prior to October 12, 1800. On that date proceedings were instigated for administering his estate. The administration bond was signed by Charles Hans Bruno Poellnitz, Thomas Evans, David Manderville, Harris DeWitt and John Tristram Thomas. Letters of administration were granted to Baron Poellnitz and Thomas Evans, the oldest son. Baron Poellnitz was one of the administrators on account of his daughter, the widow. Various item of expense in connection with the children Thomas, Josiah, Elizabeth, John and Abel are given during the years 1800-1806, in the records of administrators' returns to the Court.

Mrs. Evans, the widow, married later for the third time Carlos Robeson who had been prominent in Marlborough. The children then lived with the oldest daughter Rebecca who had married Charles Irby, Jr. The names of those signing the bond are of interest as Thomas Evans, Jr. married a daughter of Harris DeWitt, Josiah Evans married his niece, and Abel Evans married the daughter of David Mandeville, and John Tristram Thomas was the son of Tristram Thomas who acknowledged, as Justice of the Peace, in 1785 the Revolutionary claim of Col Evans. There was no child by the second marriage of Col. Evans.

I am unable at this time to determine accurately the father of this Thomas Evans, but Wm B. Hall says that both his father and his grandfather were named Thomas! as Bishop Gregg had written. Hall goes on to say that he has worked out five Thomases in the direct line [but he gives no dates or details]
DAR gives death date as 12 October 1800 and says that he served as a private in the Revolution.

In the Census of 1790 for Cheraw District he is listed as having one male over sixteen, three under sixteen, two females, and 31 slaves.

On 299 Moss has "While residing in Cheraw District, he served under Captain Edmund Irby, Col Hicks and General McIntosh at the siege of Charleston." South Carolina records 2268 give documentation.

Heitman says (p 219) a Thomas Evans was paymaster for 2d SC in 1777; served to ____, served in cavalry under Lt Col Peter Horry. SC records 268;

According to the Pee Dee Advocate for 8 July 1926 the license was issued 3 March 1800 for Col. Thomas Evans of Marlboro, and Wilhelmin Amelia Charlotta Stewart of Darlington. To Rev Joshua Lewis."
