ID Number: I103724

  • TITLE: King
  • RESIDENCE: Mercia, Briton
  • DEATH: 0626
  • RESOURCES: See: note
Father: CREODA of Mercia

Notes

"626 - Death of King Ceorl of Mercia. He is succeeded by Penda, son of his predecessor. Prince Cwichelm of Wessex sends an assassin to murder King Edwin of Deira. Edwin is saved from the assassin's dagger by the timely intervention of one of his thanes who is killed in the process. Edwin's daughter, Eanflaed, is born the same night and he promises to give her for baptism to St. Paulinus, if he is victorious over the instigator of this crime. Edwin discovers Cwichelm's treachery and marches on Wessex. Prince Cwichelm and his father, King Cynegils of Wessex, march north to meet the Northumbrians at the Battle of Win Hill & Lose Hill, possibly with the aid of King Penda of Mercia. Despite their army's superior numbers, the Wessex duo are defeated and flee south. Edwin keeps his promise to St. Paulinus."

Baron WILLIAM MAUDUIT

ABT 1196 - Apr 1257

ID Number: I59250

  • TITLE: Baron
  • RESIDENCE: England
  • BIRTH: ABT 1196, Of Hanslope, Bucks, England
  • DEATH: Apr 1257

Family 1 : ALICE de NEWBURGH of Warwick
  1.  WILLIAM MAUDUIT Earl of Warwick
  2. +ISOBEL MAUDUIT of Warwick

Notes

Isabel Mauduit, daughter of William Mauduit and Unknown.

Thomas Beaumont was married to Ela, countess of Salisbury (who nearly lived on until the very end of the thirteenth century), and if their union failed to produce any issue, then it was likely that the marriage of his sister Margery to John de Plessis probably would. It was only on Margery's death in 1253 that it was clear the earldom was going to descend to the Mauduits, and even then any issue from the marriage of William Mauduit and Alice de Segrave would have prevented the earldom coming into William of Elmley's hands. In effect the earldom descended by chance and by default, for it was the failure of both the Beaumont and Mauduit lines to produce male heirs that allowed the earldom to pass into the hands of the Beauchamps in 1268, and not the result of a cunning marriage policy on the part of William of Elmley.
