Maj. Isaac Hite of Belle Grove who was aid to Gen. Muhlenberg in the war of the revolution born Feb. 7, 1758 died Nov. 24, 1836.

"Belle Grove manor was completed in 1797 by Isaac Hite, a Revolutionary War patriot married to the sister of James Madison. The 383-acre plantation was the scene of an October 1864 battle that eventually saw Union forces deal the Confederacy a decisive defeat in the Valley.
June 17, 2002--It would be called the Cedar Creek Battlefield and Belle Grove Plantation National Historical park, but private landowners and organizations would continue to live, work and operate inside park boundaries. Rep. Frank R. Wolf of Virginia introduced legislation in Congress last week that would set the boundaries of such a park at 3000 acres over parts of three counties, at the intersection of Frederick, Shenandoah and Warren. The location would be roughly between the towns of Middletown and Strasburg.

"The Park Service, the landowners, the local community and others have worked tirelessly to develop a park that preserves our heritage while also protecting individual property rights," Wolf said at a news conference inside the Belle Grove manor." http://www.civilwarinteractive.com/newcedarcreek.htm

A little known station was called Clear's Station or Clear's Cabins. Collins said it was in Bullitt County and it was erected by George Clear before 1783. It was on Clear Run, a short distance from the crossing of the Wilderness Trail from Louisville to Bullitt's Lick - near where later stood Huber's Station on the L&N railroad. It was not a fortunate location for Clear because Isaac HITE, Robert Shanklin, David Williams, Peter Casey, Ebenezer Severns and Peter Higgins had been through this neighborhood in 1776 and put in a claim. A law suit ensued because of conflicting claims and in the end, Clear only received 28 acres out of his original 1,400.
Isaac Hornbeck and his family came to Clears in 1783 and in 1784 the Shanklins came with a party including Mrs. Sodowsky and James Alexander.

BELLE GROVE: "Belle Grove manor house was built in 1794 by Issac Hite, Jr., one of the leaders of the Shenandoah Valley's Anglo-German community. Isaac Hite brought his bride, Nelly Conway Madison, sister of James Madison, to Belle Grove in 1783. The design of the house was influenced by Thomas Jefferson's architectural genius. A focus of valley life, the house survived Union General Sheridan's occupation during the Civil War Battle of Cedar Creek.

Once described as "the most splendid building west of the Blue Ridge," Belle Grove Plantation is one of the most imposing and important structures of its time remaining in Virginia’s historic Shenandoah Valley. The farmstead is still used to display regional arts and crafts, merging Irish, English and German traditions. Visit Belle Grove on-line at www.bellegrove.org
