Son of Leo B. Henry Swartz was a molder by trade, but farmed principally. At one time he owned 50 acres of land, on a part of which the Scranton courthouse now stands. After residing in Dunmore, Blooming Grove (where he was engaged in lumbering), Carbondale, Clarks Green and Milwaukee (where he operated and iron foundry), he came to Falls Twp. He purchased a timbered tract, put up a sawmill and lumbered for many years. He was born in 1805 and died May 4, 1895. He was a member of the Methodist Church. His wife was Miss Melissa Miller and bore him: Leander, Mary, George, Oliver, Harriet R., Ellen A., William and Henry.

Wyoming County, PA In 1762 settlers from New England came to the Wyoming Valley, but were driven out by the Indians. It was not until after the Sullivan expedition in 1779 that families were able to establish a permanent settlement in the Tunkhannock area. In 1842, Wyoming County was created from part of Luzerne County. The name "Wyoming" is derived from an Indian word meaning "extensive meadows." With it's glistening streams, gently rolling hills and tranquil valleys. Wyoming County is undoubtedly one of Pennsylvania's most scenic counties. With a history and heritage running as wide and deep as the Susquehanna River that crosses it's pastoral fields and meadows, the Wyoming County Historical Society was organized to make this information available to the public.

Henry Swartz lived in Dunmore and purchased 200 acres in Dunmore Corners, after he sold out, some went to Moscow and Elmhurst and some stayed in Old Forge and Duryea section. (NE PA) Newton c1842-4 Falls Twp, Lackawanna County. Southwest: Luzerne County; Northwest: Wyoming County.

Lackawanna is the 67th and most recently formed PA county. It came into existence on 17 Apr 1878 from part of Luzerne County. Because geographical names change over the years, it's important to realize that while we may think of an area as a particular name, our ancestors may have called it something very different. For example, some of my ancesters lived in what is now the borough of Dunmore, Lackawanna, back when it was part of Providence Township, Luzerne County. This is significant for genealogists because it impacts where vital records may be stored, how the area was indicated in the census and directories, etc.

(Pittston is halfway between Wilkes Barre, Luzerne County and Scranton Lackawanna County, PA) (Waverly is not far from the Milwaukee section of Lackawanna County)

"In 1870 falls township F194- Henry is 65-a mail carrier and Melissa-62--their neighbors-all next to each other in a row are-James Ross/Mary Jane Swartz, and William Swartz/Cynthia Sickler. Wm & Mary being children of Henry Swartz and Melissa Miller.
In 1880 Falls twp. F30 Henry is 75-a farmer-all Pa. and wife-Melissa-72-Pa, N.Y., Vt."

According to "a brief sketch-ancestry and life of Stephen Miller "By Mary M. Besecker Stone (1901) Henry and Melissa had the following children--
1-Leander B-1820 D-@ 4 mos old
2-Mary Jane-B- 17 Nov 1831 D-19 Jan 1917
3-William P. B-11 Jan 1834 D-11 Dec 1927
4-Judson Henry B-1836 D-1923
5-George B-
6-Oliver B-1839 D-1924
7-Roxelana (Harriet Roxanne) B-7 Nov 1842-Salem Twp-Wayne Co, Pa d-19 Sept 1915-Falls twp Marr-Azor Ross 16 Jan 1877-falls twp
8-Ellen B-1848
( the births and deaths came from researchers over the years-names in brackets are what other researchers told me).

If you can find it in a library-"Wyo & Lackawanna Valleys" Pub-1906--N.Y.-Chicago, Ill--a good story on Henry Swartz and some of his ancesters, with some minor mistakes, such as the year Henry was born-but the rest tells you a lot about Henry, and some others. Helen Ross
