JAMES BEAUCHAMP

ABT 1215 - ____

ID Number: I103976

  • RESIDENCE: England
  • BIRTH: ABT 1215
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3761]
Father: WALTER (Walchaline) de BEAUCHAMP
Mother: JOANE de MORTIMER

Notes

"James, another male relative of Earl William, deserves mention. Sometimes described as the earl's uncle, at other times the earl's brother, James appears to have been the most intellectually active of the Beauchamps, as well as the most obscure member of the family; in 1283 he was granted royal protection to go overseas ‘for study’." [S3761]

Margaret MCCONNELL

ABT 1812 - BEF 1885

ID Number: I34357

  • RESIDENCE: Williamsburgh Dist. Craven Co. SC
  • BIRTH: ABT 1812
  • DEATH: BEF 1885
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1246]
Father: George MCCONNELL
Mother: Sarah SCOTT

Family 1 : Eliphalet H. MILLER
  1.  Thomas M. MILLER C.S.A.
  2.  Julius MILLER C.S.A.
  3.  Louisa MILLER

Notes

Margaret McConnell, daughter of George, married Eliphalet H. Miller. As devisee of her uncle, Thomas McConnell, she came into the ownership and possession of a large estate consisting of money, Negroes, and land. After the death of her parents, her uncle, who was then a widower, took charge of her and her sister, Eliza. He remembered them both in his will but Margaret was mad heiress. The will provided that Margaret should forfeit the estate left to her if she married any man whose name commenced with the letter "C". Her uncle had in his mind a young man of the neighborhood named "Chambers" to whom he had conceived for some reason which I have never heard, an aversion. She could hardly have done worse than when she married Miller. He was a complete failure as a business man, extravagant and thriftless. To be raised suddenly from humble circumstances to wealth was more than he could stand. He was, however, a popular man, and for many years Represented Williamsburg District in the Senate of the State Legislature. His love of politics had much to do with his financial ruin. His wife was a woman of sweet temper and affectionate disposition. Miller and his wife And children owned and occupied the old McConnell homestead, on the Georgetown Road about one mile from Black Mingo. It was a very attractive place when I first remember it. I passed it in 1885, every vestage of improvements were gone, and I found it difficult to find where the attractive house had once stood. The title passed out of the family years ago. Margaret Miller and her husband are both dead. Margaret and Eliphalet H. Miller had children born to them. There may have been others
