1790 census of Wilkes County, GA. Children of John Wheat and Nancy Kennedy are:

ii. JOSEPH WHEAT, b. November 01, 1798, Alabama; d. November 13, 1874, Pearl River County, Mississippi.

Wheat Memorial From: Mmerr39@aol.com
"The Wheat Cemetery Memorial will be at 2 PM Memorial Day. Uniformed Compatriots and riflemen are most welcome to help lend the event a more martial air. But remember -- the main focus will be the honoring of the American Revolutionary War Patriot. We're a sub-part of the program, but still honoring the Wheat family's CSA vets. The cemetery is located (I'm working from memory here!) about .75 miles north of the intersection of Hwy. 43 and Hwy. 26 at Crossroads, MS. This is about 5 miles east of the Pearl River at Bogalusa, LA, and 15 (?) miles west of Poplarville, MS. It is also about twenty miles north of Picayune, MS.

There is a small sign for the cemetery on the left (west) side of the road, if you're traveling north from the 43/26 intersection. Do not turn left at the sign, as that gravel road is blocked. Turn left (west) about forty yards further north of the sign at the very next gravel road. Go straight on this road for about 100 yards. Bear to your left (heading south now); you'll pass what looks like a very small gravel operation. A river will be on your right in the distance. Continue for some 200 yards, where you'll re-enter the woods. Bear to your right (west), continuing along a grassy road. The cemetery is about 100 yards up along this road. It is fenced and well-maintained."

Historic, Triple Memorial Service Set for NW Pearl River County on Memorial Day
At 2 PM, Monday, May 26, 2003, the Gainesville Volunteers, SCV Camp 373, Pearl River County, will take part in a triple memorial service at the John Wheat Cemetery honoring the following members of the Wheat Family (a major family in this part of MS): an American Patriot of the Revolutionary War, two American Patriots of the War of 1812, and two Southern Patriots of the War for Southern Independence.

Over one-hundred and fifty Wheat Family members are already expected for the event. The event has been publicized in area newspapers and "Mississippi Today" (largest circulation periodical published in MS), so there is every chance of a really huge crowd at this beautiful family cemetery, located under pine trees on a small hill overlooking a small river or lake.

Several heritage groups, including the SAR and the DAR, will be participating in the event. Several newspapers are supposed to be covering the ceremony, with the possibility that WLOX-TV from the MS Gulf Coast will also be there. The SAR commander will be the overall chair for the event.

The Confederate portion of the event will feature salutes to the Confederate and MS flags, the reading of Gen. S.D. Lee’s Charge to the SCV, a brief history of the 9th MS Cavalry (in which the two CS vets served), unveiling of two bronze plaques at the graves of the CS vets, the laying of two wreaths at their graves, the firing of a rifle salute, the presentation to the Wheat Family of a booklet detailing the service of all known MS Wheat CS Soldiers, and, possibly, the firing of a cannon salute by the Washington Artillery.

The Gainesville Volunteers would like to invite all interested SCV Members and their families to this unique triple memorial service. Compatriots interested in participating in the event should arrive by around 1 PM at the John Wheat Cemetery, located on the west side of Hwy. 43, about ¾ of a mile north of the junction of Hwy. 43 and Hwy. 26 in NW Pearl River County at the Crossroads Community (which is little more than a sign by the road).

From Poplarville, take Hwy. 26 west approximately fifteen miles to the junction of Hwy. 43 and 26, then turn right and look for the "John Wheat Cemetery" signs on the west/left side of the road.

From Boglausa, LA, take Hwy. 43 approximately five miles to the junction of Hwy. 43 and Hwy. 26, then turn left and look for the "John Wheat Cemetery" signs on the west/left side of the road.

From Picayune, take Hwy. 43 north approximately twenty miles to the junction of Hwy. 43 and Hwy. 26, then continue north, looking for the "John Wheat Cemetery" signs on the west/left side of the road.
From Columbia, take Hwy. 43 south approximately thirty-seven miles and look for the "John Wheat Cemetery" signs on the west/left side of the road. If you come to the junction of Hwy. 43 and Hwy. 26, just turn around and go ¾ of a mile back north.

A good showing of uniformed Compatriots would be most impressive! Ladies and children in period attire would also add to the atmosphere! Of course, period attire is absolutely not required!

While we should have enough uniformed, weaponed Compatriots to make up a simply adequate rifle squad, we would most especially welcome any additional reinforcements who could help make the rifle squad truly impressive! Accordingly, uniformed Compatriots with rifles who would like to be a part of the armed contingent firing salutes to the two CS vets at this old family cemetery are most genuinely welcomed!

We may also be asked to fire salutes to the Revolutionary and War of 1812 vets, so please bring plenty of cartridges with you!

If you don’t have a "piece," but want to come uniformed and just stand with us in the ranks of SCV soldiers honoring these CS soldiers, then please come on out and make this a most impressive showing of troops! Bring your flags on poles and hold them in a massing of flags and uniforms! We’d love to have you there!
Non-participating Compatriots and family members are asked to bring a lawn chair, as this triple memorial service will be somewhat lengthy. Even participants might want a chair to rest in for those parts of the ceremony in which they are not participating. (Of course, we may be asked to form a uniformed backdrop to the whole event and thus be asked to stand for the whole ceremony behind the speakers and other presenters.)

WHERE ELSE WOULD YOU RATHER BE ON MEMORIAL DAY!?!?!?

Videographers and photographers are most welcome, as most of our Camp will be actively participating in the event and, thus, unable to document same! A number of members of the Wheat family, too, are too aged, too infirm, or simply unable to travel to the event from great distances, so a video copy of the ceremonies would be most precious to them!

The Wheat Family has invited all SCV participants to refreshments and a Pot luck supper after the event. The supper will be held at Bethel Baptist Church, on Hwy. 43, about two miles north of the "John Wheat Cemetery" sign on Hwy. 43. We are asked to please bring a covered dish if at all possible.

Many thanks to my friend John Echols (greatest newsletter editor in the Confederation!) and his vaunted SOUCOM email update system for helping spread the word about this most important event. Likewise, many thanks in the 5th Brigade to my friend Hon. Mike Merritt (a ceaseless soldier for the Cause!) for sending this info out on his "5th Brigade Events" email update system! Additionally, many thanks to our overworked, under-appreciated Division Webmaster, Hon. William Lee (host of the best MS Civil War info site in the Universe!), if he is able to post this notice on the Division Website on such short notice! Thanks, guys!
