There are other affidavits from witness that know Joshua and his character.

There is a letter to a Mrs. Nannie G. Parks, Marion Carnegie Library, Marion, IL 11/6/1936. Dear Madam: Reference is made to your letter in which you request the Revolutionary War record of Joshua Tyner, who served from Georgia and died in IL. The data give herein where found in pension claim, S. 32561, based upon service of Joshua Tiner in the Revolutionary War. Joshua Tiner was born 7/21/1767, in Wilkes, Co, GA, where his father was living during the latter part of the Rev War; the names of his parents were not stated. While a resident of Wilkes Co, GA, Joshua Tiner enlisted and served as spy and private, ranging the fontier against the hostile indians, on tours shown as follow: from 8/15/1781, four months in Captain Joel Doss' Co, Colonel James Little's regiment; from about 3/1/1782, seven months in Captain Joseph Nail's co; and from 12/1/1782, ten months and fifteen days in Captain Joseph Nail's co. He was in one engagement with the indians in which both indians and settlers were killed. He returned to his father's house in Wilkes Co, GA in 5/1784, where he resided until 1806, when he moved to Mongomery Co, TN, thence in 1817 or 1818 to IL Territory, in the vicinity of Franklin and Jackson Co. He was allowed pension on his application executed 9/3/1832, at which time he resided in Franklin Co, IL. His name was borne Joshua Tyner on the pention rolls, he signed Joshua Tiner. In 1833 the soldier resided very near the line between Jackson and Franklin Co IL he referred them to his family but gave no name and no reference was made to his marriage. Referred as Joshua Tiner, Sr in 1832. Very truly yours, A. D. Miller, Executive Assist to the Administrator.

Children: Willis TYNER, Sarah TYNER, John TYNER, Richard Alonzo TYNER, Isham TYNER, Nancy TYNER, Lucy TYNER, Priscilla A. TYNER, Joshua TYNER , Jr., Mary H. TYNER, Martha TYNER, James G. TYNER, Winnifred TYNER, Anna Eliza TYNER, Rebecca TYNER.

"Joshua Tyner was born Jul. 21, 1769 in Wilkes County, GA and died, Dec. 26, 1838 in Franklin County, IL. (This and other dates on his family taken from a family Bible that Joshua had kept wrapped in a deer skin.). They probably left GA along with Joshua's brother, Noah, and several of Winifred's brothers. (Taken from an article on the HUNT family in "HISTORY OF ELBERT COUNTY, GA" 1790 to 1835. (I (LAW) have corresponded with descendants of Joshua Tyner. Mrs. Elma Rust, 18011 Hwy 36, Blachly, OR 97412 states she is a 3rd. gt. gr. dau. of both John Teasley III and Lucy Hunt. She has supplied much info on Joshua's descendants. But, many of the family traditions Joshua's family has handed down about early GA contain many errors and these have been picked up and perpetuated by later Tyner researchers, making in some cases, itís hard to separate fact from fiction."

Subject: Genealogy question re: Tyner

Ms. Bass,

My name is Kevin Flynn, a reporter at the Rocky Mountain News in Denver. I
tried to send this email to your daughter Beck Bonner as well, from the My
Southern Family web page info, but it was returned as undeliverable.

I have done a few stories about a controversial University of Colorado
professor named Ward Churchill. Primarily, my focus has been to research his
claims of Indian ancestry, which are in dispute.

Mr. Churchill has told me that he has Cherokee blood coming from Joshua
Tyner (7/21/1767 Wilkes County Georgia -- 12/26/1838 Franklin County IL).
Joshua would be Churchill's gggg-grandfather. I have found only anecdotal
claims, but no documentation, that Joshua was half Cherokee. You have done a
lot of research on the Tyner line, it appears from your My Southern Family
site. In fact, you appear to have identified Joshua's mother as Abigail
(Abby), a claim that I can find from no other Tyner researcher (some Tyner
researchers say the first wife of Joshua's father Richard Tyner was Eliza,
and other sources said Joshua was the son of Eliza and a "Cherokee chief."

All of this sounds so speculative, but your pages seem to provide the most
definitive information on this.

Do you have documentation of any kind showing that Abigail was the wife of
Richard Tyner and the mother of Joshua?

Also, I noted that some of the histories of the Indian raid on Richard's family in 1788 or 89 say that Joshua, who was about 21 then, was killed.
This obviously conflicts with later documentation showing that Joshua lived a long life and died in southern Illinois, where his descendants eventually included Ward Churchill. Can you help to resolve this?

Thank you for any interest you have in assisting me.
