John Wesley SANDIFER

31 Jul 1889 - 4 Oct 1959

ID Number: I79244

  • OCCUPATION: farmer; Civil Service in maintenance of military aircraft at Mobile, AL
  • RESIDENCE: Pike Co. MS and Prichard, AL
  • BIRTH: 31 Jul 1889, Tylertown, Mississippi
  • DEATH: 4 Oct 1959, Prichard, Alabama
  • BURIAL: Therrell Annex of Whistler Cem. in Prichard, AL
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3016]
Father: William Josephus SANDIFER
Mother: Hester O'QUIN

Family 1 : Ida Elizabeth COLE

Notes

Authored by Cole descendent. Edited by D.E. LeLeux, cousin-in-law or cousin, depending on further research.

James Wesley was the son of William Josephus Sandifer and Hester O'Quin, and the great-great grandson of Peter Sandifer, Sr. James married Ida Elizabeth Cole on Aug 21, 1916 in Tylertown, MS. Ida was the daughter of John Henrif Cole (Charbonneau), M.D. and Nancy Campbell Smith. Twelve children were born of this marriage.

James was a farmer and share-cropper during his early manhood. When he married Ida, they lived on his father's land and farmed it until his father's death. His stepmother and stepbrother then sold the land about 1924. James then went to work in Akron, Ohio, but when Ida refused to move there, he returned home to \Tylerstown, MS\. They then move to Greenville, MS in late Oct 1927. The family suffered through the Great Depression here while sharecropping. One son, Dennis Ansell (age 7 mos.), died of pneumonia while living in Greenville and is buried there.
Later, James and a couple of sons left for Mobile, AL in 1943 to work in the shipyards during WWII. Mother and all children then moved there in Feb 1944. First living at Grand Blvd in north Mobile (now Chickasaw) they moved to gov't housing at 306 Blount St in what is now Prichard, AL where they lived for 10 yrs. From there they moved to Barbour Ave in the same housing project, when in 1955 James was injured in an auto accident. This happened while leaving work from Brookley Field -- employed by Civil Service in maintenance of military aircraft. This crippled him for future work and the family feels contributed to a premature death.
James died at 18-E North Fairport St. of a stroke on Oct 4, 1959 at 7:50 a.m. and is buried at the Therrell Annex of the Whistler Cemetery in Prichard, AL.
