Notes

Researching STANDARD. Some loose Standards Grouped here for Research purposes - relationship of kids on this card to each other is not determined yet, but each ones descendants are. please write jbass@digital.net.

This Hypotheis is taken from the Standard, Higgins and Related Families. Ref. The American Standards are thought to be descended from the Somersetshire and Oxfordshire Standards in England.

CONFLICT: Cavaliers and Pioneers shows STANDARD in America as early as 1667.
1704 VA Rent Rolls: Standard Wm M.S. King William County, VA.

"The first Standard to come to America was the Reverend Dr. Thomas Standard who, along with his wife Mary, came to Brookhaven, Long Island in 1725 as Episcopal missionary and physician.. Dr. Thomas Standard was born at Taunton, Somersethire, ENG c 1678. He was made Rector of Westchester Parish on Jun 8, 1727 where he served for many years. His wife Mary's obit in the New York Post-Boy, dated 6 Feb 1758, stated she died about 70 years of age, wife of Rev. Thomas Standard on 27 Jan 1758. Rev Thomas died about 1760 and they are both buried under the communion table of the church at Eastchester, New York.

His will dated 1 Feb 1758 and proved Jan 1760 left his estate to his nieces and nephews and William Jesse in England. His execs were James Barnard and Andrew Clements.

While they were not the immigrant ancestor of the American line of Standards, they are thought to be the Uncle and Aunt of our immigrant ancestor. Within a year or two after Rev. Standard died, five young Standards came to America: William, Daniel, Rachel, George, and Thomas".

"A copy of Rev Thomas Standard's Will shows heirs as: Thomas Standard of London, barber, son of my brother ______, and to George Standard and Mary Standard, children of my brother, James Standard, late of Taunton, in Somersetsire, in Old England dec'd, and to William Burridge and Sarah Burridge, children of my sister, Sarah Burridge, the wife of William Burridge, of Taunton aforesaid. Also bequeathed to the heirs of William Jesse, of Westhatch near Taunton, the sum of forty pounds, sterling money of Great Britain, before they make distribution of my said estate amongst my nephews and neices before named."

There is no evidence at all that the Virginia Standard immigrants are related to the Rev Thomas Standard, and except for mention of a George and a Thomas, the names in the will do not match or show a William, Daniel, and Rachel.

There is no doubt that William, Rachel and Daniel are related; Daniel signed the marriage bond of William in Edgecombe Co. NC, and Rachel who married Abel Waddell migrated with John Hodges and Ann Standard to E. Feliciana Parishes, LA by 1810. There are many records in Cheraw, Marlboro Cos. SC which include together Abel Waddell, William Standard, and John Hodges.

STANDARDS in MS:
Mississippi Amite County, Marsh, Elizabeth married Standard, William on 11 Nov 1824.
John in Altala Co. MS before 1834;
Hugh left a will in Adams Co. MS in 1819, wife Ann Simpson.
John in Madison Co. MS in 1830.
Benjamin 1840 Adams Co. MS.
Hinds Co.MS in 1840 shows William, Henry, M. J., Wm.
William M. and Cynthia Standard in Hinds Co. MS in 1853 and his brother, Henry Standard.
8 Standards listed in 1850 in Warren, Simpson, Harrison, Attala & Hinds Cos. MS.
Charlie Standard in Pike Co. MS m. Courtney Jane Coney in 1880, and they migrated from Pike Co. MS to Nacogdoches, Bell And Milam Cos. TX.

Standderd is the way it is written in the old Family Bible, but other spellings might be: This surname *may* be a form of STANNARD/STONARD/STANNART. C.W. Bardsley (1901) "A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames" says that this is from "the son of Stanard" or "Stanhard" and is a well known Norfolk and Suffolk surname. Bardsley gives examples from English records of the first name and surname from the Domesday Book to 1607, and counts of the surname in ca. 1901 directories from London, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Philadelphia.
