ID Number: I18741

  • OCCUPATION: 1870 owned and operated Penn's Store; Farmer And Surveyor
  • RESIDENCE: Patrick Co. VA and Rollings, Lincoln (Now Casey) Co. KY
  • BIRTH: 19 Feb 1852
  • DEATH: 4 Jul 1913

Father: Gabriel Jackson "Jack" PENN
Mother: Cynthia CONDOR

Family 1 : Isabelle MAY
  1. +David Martin PENN

Notes

"They had one son, David Martin Penn. Dick and Isabelle lived in a little house next to the store Dick Penn was truely a man of many talents. Among his professions were a surveyor, dentist, druggist, and postmaster. He was the community's first postmaster and Penn's Store was site of the first post office in the area known as Rollings, Kentucky. In c.1910 the post office moved to Gravel Switch to be close to the train which would stop in the town to get gravel from the creek.
Dick Penn was given a grant by the governor of Kentucky to administer drugs. Penn's Store carried a wide assortment of drugs in which Penn sold to the local people. Penn was also known to have a cure for skin cancer and treated many people with such afflictions. He was given the cure by a foreign doctor. It is believed that he came to the area to meet with Dr. Cleaver who had an office near the store. Dick Penn swore to secrecy the formula and never divulged its ingredients. Since no one in the family held Penn's love for medicine, on July 4, 1913, after a hot day of surveying, Martin Wilson Penn died from a heat stroke on the store porch. Thus the cancer secret went with him."

  2.  Lawrence WASHINGTON
  3. +John WASHINGTON
  4. +Townsend WASHINGTON of Green Hill
  5. +Henry WASHINGTON

Notes

John((2)) Washington, Sr. (Laurence((1))), born after 1667; married Mary, daughter of Richard Townsend, who emigrated to Virginia, in 1637. Her sister, Frances, married Francis Dade, and had Cadwallader Dade.
John Washington, Sr., was so named in the will of his uncle, Col. John Washington, as his "nephew and godson." He is also named in the will of Laurence((2)), of that family, 1698, as "my cousin John Washington, Sr., of Stafford Co." This Washington being John, Sr., it follows that John Washington, son of Colonel John W., b. 1660, was dead in 1698. John Washington, Sr., son of Laurence, wrote to his sister in England, that he had three sons and one daughter, two of whom died before 1699. John Washington was Sheriff of Stafford Co., 1717-18.
John((2)) Washington, Sr., married Mary Townsend. They had issue:
I. Laurence((3)) Washington, b. 1692-3, d. before 1699.
II. A daughter, name not known; d. before 1699.
III. Henry((3)) Washington, b. 1695.
IV. Townsend((3)) Washington, b. 1705.

"Lawrence Washington provided that upon the death of he and his wife, his estate should revert to and be managed by his first cousin John Washington of Chotank, King George County (then Stafford County) Virginia. Upon learning of the death of his cousin's wife, John dispatched George Gale and the Courts of Stafford County, petitioning for the legal adoption of Young Augustine and his older brother and younger sister under the terms of Lawrence Washington's Will. The courts found in favor of John and George Gale relinquished custody of Augustine. In 1706 Augustine Washington's life changed abruptly again. At the age of 10 he was forced to give up the comforts of Appleby School and return to the rurals of Virginia and Chotank." [S2329] [S1872]
