A Baptist minister; He was the father of the Statesman and Orator, Henry Clay. Just after Reverand Clay's death, the British under Tarleton came to Hanover. The men were allowed to forage in the countryside, they came to Clay Spring. They took what they could find of the food and animals, entered the house and destroyed the furniture, and freed the slaves, leaving the young widow of 31 years of age with 3 young children and with practically nothing on which to live. She confronted Tarleton who gave her a few coins.
Photo of Clay Spring home, said to have been biult by George Hudson, is shown on page 75 of the book Old Homes of Hanover County, VA (photo on file-not book).
