Karen Cotter cotterkaren@yahoo.com 2002-10-23 postem to
Jacob Michaux, son of Abraham Michaux and Susanne Rochet, born 1700, Holland per Jim Robertson. Brother of the Ann Madelin Michaux who married Richard Woodson. This is confirmed in The Huguenot Abraham Michaux and Descendants by J. D. Eggleston in Genealogies of Virginia Families - from The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, It shows: There are several papers extant, each supposed to authoritative giving the names of the children of Abraham Michaux and his wife Susanna Rochet. Several shows "Jacob (Michaux) who married Judith Woodson". It has been published that Jacob was born in Holland in 1700. This does not seem probable. Jacques (James) was baptized in Amsterdam on 'August 15, 1700" and probably in early infancy. It seem probable that the names Jacques and Jacob were confused by a later generation.

Was baptized Dec 11, 1695. Like his father, Jacob was a man of great enterprise. He aquired several thousand acres of land on the James river and branches of the Appomattox river, and operated a Mill and a Ferry in addition to farming extensively. Since his will does not mention his wife, it is assumed that she predeceased him. He died between the day he signed his will Dec 13, 1743 and Jan 15, 1744 when his will was probated. By his will he left substantial lands, 11 slaves, to his sons and daughters. He appointed Richard Woodson and Alexander Cunningham as Executors of his estate.

I being in perfect strength of mind all though weak in body do make this my last will and Testament setting all others aside.

Item: I give Edward Butler fifty acres of land where he now lives as it is already laid out to him and his heirs for ever.

Item: I give unto Peter Legrand four hundred acres of land being on Cromes quarter branch he taking half of old survey and half the new running up the branch to conclude dividing the old survey across taking the plantation, I give to him and his heirs for ever.

Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Judah two negro wenches named Nell and Lucy with four hundred acres of land lying between James Cunningham's and William Cox and Thomas Basset's and Peter Legrand lines to her and the heirs of her body lawfully begotten.

Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth my two negros named Jude and Sarah with my plantation that lies on the branches of Deep Creek and Mudy Creek to her and the heirs of her body lawfully begotten.

Item: I give and bequeath to my son Joseph three negros named thus, Hanah and her child Waddy and a negro boy named Tom with eleven hundred and fifty acres of land lying on the branches of Badluck Creek the Long Branch to him and his heirs for ever and fifty pounds current money and my Still.

Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Jacob four negroes named thus, Cato, Scrug, Ned and Peg with three hundred acres of river land where I now live to be laid of according to my fathers will and one hundred acres of land more or less on the north side of the James River which was the land I bought from the Adkinsons, and two hundred and seventy odd acres lying on Mohawk Creek to him and his heirs for ever.

Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth one of the best feather beds and furniture and the side sadel.

Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Judah one feather bed and furniture and thirty pounds current on the day of marriage or when of age to be paid.

Item: I give and bequeath to Peter Legrand thirty pounds current money to be paid after all my debts and legacy's are paid and the money to be raised out of the profits of the ferry and mill and the crops and the remaining part of my Estate I give to my son Jacob and that my sons Jacob and Joseph may demand their Estates at eighteen years of age.

A Lunud, part of the family is running a Ferry across the Santee River in SC. This could be where the knowledge for Jacob Michaux to run a Ferry came from. Jacob received 300 acres of land from his fathers will. He sold the land bequeth by his father Abraham Apr 27, 1727, to Daniel Croom.
