MAREEN DUVALL, Merchant and Planter, a Huguenot refugee, came to Anne Arundel County, Maryland, about the year, 1655, and settled on the south side of the South River, upon a tract of land of several hundred acres, which was patented to him by Lord Baltimore by the name of “Laval.” He was b. about 1630-5; d. Mareen DUVALL contributed to the public cost of an expedition against the Nanticoke Indians in 1678. Appointed by the General Assembly of Maryland in 1683 a Commissioner to purchase sites and lay out towns, etc.

"Mareen Duvall, the Huguenot French emigrant to Maryland, married. First, Mary -----. Their daughter, Susannah Duvall, married Robert Tyler in 1694. Their daughter, Susannah Tyler, born July 14, 1700, married in 1716 John Lamar, son of Thomas Lamar and his second wife, Ann Pottiger."

A traditional account by historian Glenn D. Lough claims that the first settlers, Pompey Leggit and his wife Jenny Duvall Leggit, homesteaded at Rivesville in present-day Marion County in 1694. With them were Jenny's brother, John Duvall, the William Burris family, and the Bozarth family. The families are said to have moved on to Philippi in present-day Barbour County by 1704, a site they abandoned in 1721. The Leggit's sons, Thomas and George Leggit, established a trading post at Lowsville in 1766.

Mareen DUVALL contributed to the public cost of an expedition against the Nanticoke Indians in 1678. Appointed by the General Assembly of Maryland in 1683 a Commissioner to purchase sites and lay out towns, etc."

Mareen Duvall came to America from Nantes, France under Co lonel William Burges in 1659 settling in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. "Du vall's delight", 1704 located at the mouth of Rogue's Harbor consisted of 3 108 acres. It served a the home of Mareen and John Duvall. Mareen is said to have come from the neighborhood of Brittany, some support is lent to this from the fact that to the first piece of land he patented he gives the name "Laval." There is a
town called Laval, some 60 miles from Nantes. His name Mareen is clearly a corruption of the French Marin. He was French Huguenot. Although the Edict of Nantes was not repealed until 1685 those of the religion, as Huguenots called themseves, were nevertheless severely oppressed by the goverment. Many of them setteled in other lands. It was doubtless for this reason that Mareen settled in Maryland. Mareen made his demand for land on July 25, 1659. He had patent on January 22, 1659/66 for a tract of 100 acres, called Laval, on the west side
of the South River in An ne Arundel County, Maryland. Mareen was of Protestant faith. He built a chapel for worship on his plantation at his own expense.

In the year 1705 his son, John Duvall, and his wife appeared before the vestry, of which he was a member, and deeded the land upon which the chapel stood to Queen Anne for the use of the parish, but it was not until the year 1741 that it became a parish church, supported and repaired by the community, a up to that time, it was maintained by the Duvall family. 30. Mareen Duvall, born Abt. 1635 in Laval, Normandy, France; died 05 August 1694 in (Anne Arundel) MD. He was the son of Massiot Duvall and Margaret Orbin. He married 31. Susannah Marie Brashers/Brassieur 1673.
