  • BIRTH: ABT 1740
  • DEATH: 1776, in the service Virginia Line of Contl. Estab.

  • RESOURCES: See: notes [S1424]
Father: Clement READ

Notes

Virginia Soldiers of 1776, Vol. 1
son of Col. Isaac Read, late of said county, appoints John R. Edmonds of Halifax Co., now a member of the General Assembly of Va. his Atty. Acknowledged before Paul Carrington, J. of P of Charlotte Co.

Abstract of Isaac Reads will. Charlotte Co. Until my eldest son Clement shall come of age; Wife and Children; wife Sarah: He hoped that his unborn child might be a second son. My relation and friend, Col. Thomas Read and Col. John Coleman and my wife, Executors.

Witnesses Jonathan Read, George Carrington, William Dobbs.

Note. The above copy of will bears no date, but it was probated;--At a Court held for Charlotte Co., Mar. 2, 1778, the above will was probated. Teste, Thomas Read, Clerk, Char. Co. Court.

At a Court held For Charlotte Co. July 2, 1838. On motion of Clement Read, it was certified that said Clement is eldest son of Col. Isaac Read, decd. who died in the service of the Virginia Line of Contl. Estab. in the year 1776. Copy teste, Winslow Robinson, Clerk.

"Their eldest son, Colonel Isaac Read, married a daughter of Henry Embra, (another vestryman of the Lunenburg Church,) who represented the county with his father, Clement Read. He himself represented the county with Paul Carrington, who married one of his sisters. They were both associated with Washington, Jefferson, and Henry in their patriotic movements. Paul Carrington was a zealous friend of the Episcopal Church. What were the partialities of Mr. Isaac Read, whether he followed in the footsteps of his father or not, we are unable to say. He was made colonel in a Virginia regiment, and soon after died, being laid with military honours in a vault in Philadelphia. He left a son by the name of Clement, who became a distinguished minister of the Presbyterian Church, after having for a time officiated among the Methodists. He married a descendant of Pocahontas,--a Miss Edmonds, of Brunswick,--by whom he had thirteen children." Old Churches Ministers, and Families of Virginia. Article XLVIII.
