Notes


Died testate Stafford County, Virginia 1776. He was a wealthy and influential Virginia planter long associated with the prominent families of the Northern Neck of Virginia. Both Sabina and Seth were members of of Aquia Episcopal Church. The Botts and Bridwell families owned adjoining lands in Stafford County, and there are many transactions between the two families. The 1785 census shows Joseph, Aaron, William and John Botts living near John, Abraham, George, William Sr., Moses and Benjamin Bridwell. The will of Seth botts, dated January 1763, recorded (O.G.I.) in Stafford County, Will Book N, page 323, was witnessed by William Bridwell and Moses Bridwell, sons of Samuel Bridwell. Will of Seth Botts of Stafford County, Virginia


In the name of God Amen: I Seth Botts of the County of Stafford and Parish of Overwharton being sick and weak of body but of perfect mind and memory praised be Almighty God and calling to mind the mortality of all flesh, and knowing it appointed for all men once to die, do constititute and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form as followeth, disannulling all other wills and testaments by me heretofore made or approved.
Imprimis: I commit my soul into the hands of God that gave it &.e and my body to the earth its Mother, tro be decently buried at the discretion of my Exrs hereafter mentioned.
Item: I & bequeath to my son William Botts two hundred acres of Landmore or less lying on the south run of Chappawaimsie beginning at a branch called the school house branch folllowing a line of marked trees running toward Wm. Bott's. Also I give unto him one negroe man named Tom, one negroe boy named Edward and one whipsaw, also one feather bed and bolster and Rugg, one pair of blankets, a pair of sheets, also one dish and six plates, also one horse colt, also I give unto my son, William Botts
one cow and calf to his heirs forever.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Aaron Botts one hundred and fifty acres of Land with the plantation whereon I now live being part of the same tract with my son William Bott's, and also twenty five acres joyning to it being part of a patent belonging to Robert Millian, also one negroe boy called Bob and fifty pounds cash to be laid out to buy him another slave, also my stills also one bed, one rugg and bolster, one blanket, one pair of sheets, also one horse that is now called his, also one dish & six plates also one cow and calf to him and his heirs forever. I also give unto my son Aaron Botts one Mahogany table.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Jos. Botts one hundred acres of Land out of the parcel of Land bought of Capt. John Lee beginning at a marked white oak on the middle run of Chappawamsie near the mouth of a branch called the school house branch and from thence following a line of marked trees to a corner red oak tree upon a ridge and from thence running along Lee's line on part whereof I have a small plantation now cleared, also one mulatto boy called Daniel and fifty pounds cash to buy him a young slave, also one feather bed and bolster, one rugg, one blanket, one pair of sheets, also one dish and six platesd to him and his heirs forever. I also give unto my son Jos. Botts one iron pot bought of Pope's estate, also one cow and calf.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Joshua Botts the other part of the same tract of Land, one hundred acres lying in the middle run of Chappawamsie, also one negro woman called Nell, but from this day the two first children that she shall raise shall be for my two daughters Nancy Botts and Jenny Botts and also one negroe boy called Moses, also one feather bed, one bolster, one rugg, one blanket, one pair of sheets, to him and his heirs forever, and after these two children are raised by the said Nell, until my two daughters come of age by my Exors: and then the said Nell and her issue to my son Joshua Botts, him and his heirs forever.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary* Botts one negroe boy called George and one negroe boy called George and one negroe Girl called Katharine besides the first child the said Nell shall raise to be one month old, also one feather bed and one bolster, one rugg, one blanket, one pair of sheets, also one cow to her and her heirs forever.
*This is unquestionably an error for Nancy Botts.
Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Jenney Botts one negroe Girl named Rose, she and her increase to the said Jenny Botts, and also the second child which the said Nell shall raise to be one month old, also one feather bed & bolster, one rugg, one Blankett, one pair of sheets, also one cow and calf, to her and her heirs forever.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my son John Botts two negro boys, one named Solomon the other named Anthony also one negro woman called Sarah, she and her increase to the said John Botts, also one feather bed, one rugg, one blankett, one pair of sheets, also one cow, to him and his heirs forever.
Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Prince one negroe Girl called Grace, and also fifty pounds of cash to buy her a young slave, also the feather bed and furniture that is now called hers, also one cow and calf, also one dish and six plates.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Botts one negroe Girl called Martha, also fifty pounds cash to buy her a young slave, also one bed and furniture which is now called hers, one cow and calf and one dish and six plates, also I give her my riding mare.
Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah Wigginton fourteen pounds whih is due for the land James Wigginton bought of me, to her and her heirs forever.
Item: I give and bequeath to my loving wife Sabina Botts one negroe man called Peter, also one negroe woman called Frank, also one negroe woman called Dinah, I give also the work of all my negroes to my loving wife to maintain the young children with all and to raise the young negroes with also all my whole stock and working tools to the profit of the young children (except the legacies before mentioned) to the schooling of them, and also the goods that is the house to the cloathing of them with all, but at her death it shall all be equally divided amongst my five sons. All that I have given unto my wife is during her widowhood, but at the day of her marriage she shall deliver all that I gave her into the hands of my Executors, except one negroe and one bed and one cow and one negroe that I have left my wife shall at her death be equally divided among my five sons. The cash that I have left is to be laid out to purchase slaves with by the hand of Col. John Baylis when he shall see a convenient opportunnity, and there shall be no part of this two hundred pounds drawn ou that is to purchase slaves with until it is laid out and that my Executiors shall have the liberty of working the slaves that I have left for the maintenance of the young children on any part of my land for the support of the said children until they come of age.


January the 29th 1763.


I constitute and ordain my loving wife and my son Wm. Botts and my son Aaron Botts Executors to execute this my last will & testament.
