Notes

1850 Walker Co. US Census list Abner age 35 born in TN, worth $300, wife Elizabeth age 30, son Thomas age 8, son William J., age 7 and Nuton age 5, dau Eliz age 3 and son J. Huston age 1.

According to W. A. Roberts & Charlie Gill the Pochontas Cemetery was owned by Abner Alvis. The first grave was an unk man found on the railroad tracks. The railroad employee saw Abner plowing corn in his field and asked him where they could bury the body. He showed them a place on his property, and later established the cemetery and began the old church. It is not recorded at the Walker Co. Court House how the property is deeded, perhaps this document burned along with the court house. Abner was very sickly in 1863 and could hardly sit up, he died of consumption in 1871.

Abner was a Volunteer Soldier in Indian Wars Disturbances. 1836 Dent's Co. of Chisom's Battln 2nd Seminole War, he was a private and served in AL Military volunteers in the Florida War. He served in Captain David Rusk's Company of Mtd Militiamen, as a Second Lt, 8/8/1838, served for 22 days and was paid $25, discharged 8/24/1838.

"Nacogdoches Headrights" by Carolyn Reeves Ericson, 1977 shows an entry for Abner Alvis for a Second Class Certificate, #43, for 640 acres of land in Nacogdoches, TX. He did not return the certificate and did not received the land.

MR, Gandrud, p 398.: The First Alabama Cavalry, US Volunteers, from 1863 until the end. The First was a tough, hard-riding, hard-fighting bunch of Loyalist Southerners who rode with Sherman and who had a reputation as burners. They torched Barnwell, SC to the ground, in spite of Gen. Kilpatrick's attempts to stop them, because it was a "nest of filthy Rebels that needs burning."

The First Regiment Cavalry of Alabama Volunteers (Union were in and around Glendale, MS, under the control of Col. George e. Spencer later to become a senator. A Mr. Dewes or Davis and Mr. Pat Lawson near a town called Holly Grove in Walker Co. AL, began their recruiting. They met with Elizabeth Stovall, and said she lived there with her sickly husband.

J. L. Romine said, "I think I can say truthfully that a more loyal and true Union woman did not live in the United States and her husband and her sons were just as loyal as she. She did not do anything to aid the Confederacy, but she done all she could to aid the Union cause. No such people as she and her family could have lived in this country if the Rebels had succeeded in establishing a separate government."

Her story was written up by Liz Smith of Dallas, TX.

Elizabeth would tell boys where to go in the woods to meet up with Lawson and join the army, one of which was her son Franklin Newton, age 19. A brother to Elizabeth, James F. Stovall, also joined around this time. Another son, William John Alvis joined the Union, while another Thomas G was CSA, he had died in the CSA in 1862. Perhaps this is what motivated her. She continued to aid Union soldiers, hiding them away from the Confederates, and acting as look out for them and passing signals to them in the woods.

Abner's wife filed a claim 23 Nov 1871 to the US Government for a cart & horses taken by the US Army. In the affidavit and witnesses is the story of her treachery to the Southern cause. There is no telling how many of our loved ones she caused to be killed. She aided & abeted the Union soldiers, recruited and provided supplies, security etc for the Union 1st AL Cav.

It is to the credit of the Texas Rangers who visited her home that they did not burn it down with her in it. [S315] [S18]

"The Revd. Mr. Nicholas Bedgegood died near fifteen years after his first call to this place; and almost seven years after his return, from which time he ministered here till
his death. He was regarded a good scholar, and a sound divine; an eloquent preacher and a polite gentle by man; and well beloved by his acquaintance; yet not with standing all his abilities and endowments, he was never very successful, especially in the latter part of his life: none being baptized after his return."
