John Wilkes Booth: A Sister's Memoir by Asia Booth Clarke, Terry Alford (Editor)
Format: Paperback Pub. Date: July 1999

FROM THE PUBLISHER
Since it was first published in 1938, Asia Booth Clarke's memoir of her brother John Wilkes Booth has been recognized as the single most important document available for understanding the personality of the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln. Clarke, a poet and author of two other volumes of biography of her celebrated actor-family members, wrote this reminiscence in 1874 when Lincoln's murder and her brother's ensuing death at the hands of federal soldiers were still painfully fresh in her mind. She hoped at some point to see the work published. Yet she felt compelled to keep it secret because it might enrage her husband, a professional comedian whose anger at his own arrest in 1865 on suspicion of association with Booth had threatened their marriage. At her death in 1888 the manuscript passed to friends. A half century later her heirs felt the public was receptive to such an intimate view of the most famous assassin in American history. This edition includes the first biographical appreciation of the talented Asia and corrects deficiencies in earlier prints of the memoir. Also, published for the first time, are family letters about the assassination, a chronology of Booth's life, and a family genealogy. Asia's memoir is an indispensable resource for perceiving the complexities of her ill-fated brother. Indeed, as has been said, she "turns on the light in the Booth family living room." Certainly no outsider would give such insights into the turbulent Booth's childhood or share such unique personal knowledge of the gifted actor. Asia portrays him as a enigmatic figure, at once gentle and romantic while passionate and fanatical. She writes with a sister's affection and even with indulgence, but she mingles these with horror as she confronts the calamitous aftermath the assassination brought to Booth and to his family.

Father: John Coney

A John Coney in America descends from the Frampton family. A John, as a little boy, came from Boston England to Boston, Massachusetts in 1634. His family had been resident in Kirton and Frampton from remote time, altho there are various pedigrees of branches of his family appearing in the visitations that are traced to Robert Coney of Byam in France, who came to England with the wife of Edward II, in 1308, extant records show the presence of the family name in Lincolnshire as early as 1256. Frampton Church dates back to 1100, and it is built on a foundation of another older church.

Quote from "Ancestors and Descendants of John Coney of Boston, England and Boston, MA" by Mary Lovering Holman, compiled by the author for Harriett Grace Scott of Brookline MA 1928. "Nearly all the Coneys in America are descended from John Coney. There are a few families of the name in Maine and in the West who come from more recent immigrants to the country, mainly from Ireland. "

John Conney, who married Elizabeth Nash in 1654 had 4 daughters and six sons.

In 1718, Deacon Samuel Cony was b in Boston MA son of Nathaniel Coney and Abigail Skinner removed from MA to what was then the District of Maine. (Now Augusta ME). They had Daniel, who became a Judge. Samuel b 1775, son of Samuel and grandson of the Deacon, was the first adjutant-general of the State of Maine, and m. Susan, dau of his uncle Daniel. They had Samuel who became mayor of Augusta, Judge and during the Civil War Governor of ME.

Paul Revere (original name Apollos Rivoire) (1702-1754) born in Riocaud in 1702, was sent by his family to the New World in 1715. Arriving in Boston in early 1716, Apollos was apprenticed to the English-speaking goldsmith John Coney. Following Coney's death in 1722, Apollos set up his own shop in Dock Square (today's Faneuil Hall). Some time in the 1720's he anglicized his name, first to Paul Rivoire, then to Paul Revere, the name he gave his oldest son. He married Deborah Hitchbourn* (1704-1777) in 1729. * Other spellings of family name in use in the 18th century: Hichborn, Hitchborn.

English Ancestry of John Coney From Boston England to Boston Mass In the mid-eastern part of England md there is a stretch of lowlying land much of which is below the level of the sea. Either from its resemblance to the land of the Dutch, or because like it , it is hollow land , it is called the parts of Holland, or Holland in Linclon, in the early records. The old church of Boston, St. Botolphstown, may be said to be about in the middle of this low country, its lofty spire being seen from all the surronding parishes of Grammpton, Kirton, Algarkirk, Fishtoft, Skirbbeck and so forth. This is the famous fen country to which the Saxons under Hereward the Wake retired when William The Conqueror came over in 1066.

From this part of Lincolnshire came many an earlly immigtant to new England the most striking of whom, Rev John Cotton, was from Boston its self, he having been the vicar of that parish. One of these Iimmigrants, a little boy named John Coney, With his Mother, sister and stepfather Oliver Mellows, came to Boston, Mass from Boston England in 1634. He was a nephew of the Wife of John Cotton. His family had been residents in Kirton and Frampton from remote times, for although various pedigrees of branches of his families appearing in the visitations are all traced to a Robert Coney of Byam In France, who came to England with the wife of Edward 2, in 1308, extant records show the presence of the family name in Lincolnshire as early as 1256.

The History of any old famillly antedating the beginning of the church registers, the earliest of which ony date from about 1538, has to be gleaned from wills, adminisstrations , subsidies, and other public documents. Fortunately in this family the visitation pedigrees give much information although they vary in some details. Frampton and Kirton are about four miles south of Boston. The church of St. Mary, Frampton, often called "Our Lady of Frampton" is two miles from that of SS. Peter and Paul In Kirton, the two parishes being contuguous. Frampton Church is very old, for although the present edifice dates back only to 1100, It is built on the foundation------------------- from a Library in Ft Wayne Ind.

  3.  Napoleon Bonaparte Monroe PURL
  4. +Julia Muse PURL
Family 2 : William H. CORNELL

Notes

Aka: Munroe. has birth 1824. "In an old hymnal owned by the Purl family of Magnolia, MS, Mary wrote the date of her marriage, names and birthdates of her children. From this and census records we deduce she was 13 years old when she married." gives birth: 15 Nov 1819, so she was abt 18 when she married, death: 14 Dec 1890, had cancer.

By 1870 Mary was widowed again, she is on the census as head of household, #63, age 46, with her son Joseph Purl, blind, age 26. Perhaps the initals M and C are for Muse & Capitola, names that Julia her dau used. Muse are in St. Helena Par. LA & Amite Co. MS.

" Juanita Azeline Purl (now deceased) was the family historian before she passed the torch on to me. She had a copy of a paper she found in the Pike County court house. It stated Mary was trying to contact her family back in Cincinnati. This was apparently sent to newspapers up in that area. Anyway it states she was born in Winchester VA (Frederick Co.) and last saw her brother in Cincinnati in the 1830s. Curiously he did not come south with Mary and her father. Her mother was Catherine Craig. She must have died before 1830 because John married a second time in Adams Co. (Natchez) to Parmelia Garnhart. John died in 1837. Mary married Seth Pearl/Purl two days later (I guess because she was only about 13!). James Purl married the widow Parmelia Garhart Monroe. I feel they must have all worked together on river boats. John Monroe died working on a river boat."
