Civil war veteran gets marker at grave
Sunday, July 11, 2004
By DONNA HARRIS
The Mississippi Press

BIG POINT -- Almost 71 years after his death, Pvt. John Bailey Williams III was honored with a military marker at the foot of his grave.

Buried in a family cemetery in Big Point, Williams lies eternally next to his wife, Mar'celete Cunningham Williams. Their dark, faded cement headstones look out of place on the new cement slab and the polished marble marker placed at his feet.

The placement was part of a ceremony hosted by the Helena Women's Civic Council of Helena, a newly chartered organization charged with social and civic affairs of the community.

About 35 people attended the event, including eight members from the various Civil War re-enactment groups participating in the ceremony.

Council President Janie Hans Edwards of Helena spearheaded this project because Williams was her great-grandfather.

Thunderous booms could be heard behind the darkening blue skies Saturday as Edwards stood at his grave to read a brief historical account of his life as an infantry soldier.

Williams volunteered for service in 1961 to defend the Confederacy's rights, she said. He served under Jefferson Davis until his capture and imprisonment at Timber Ridge in Tennessee.

He was released after the war, and took a Yankee uniform off a dead Union soldier to wear on his walk home, she said.

After the war, Williams farmed the land and was a butcher by trade. He married the daughter of a fellow soldier and they had eight children.

At the service, Williams was honored by members of the 9th MS Calvary Camp 1748 of Lucedale, the Live Oak Rifles Camp 1985 of Helena and the Sam Davis Camp 596 of Biloxi, who fired three rounds of volleys with muskets. Participants were Civil War re-enactors and members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Later, at a reception at the Helena Community Center, Williams' granddaughter, Dot Williams Hans, 81, of Pascagoula, said she was thrilled to see her ancestor so greatly honored.

"I believe he honestly deserved it, even though it was a 100 years too late."

She recalls the day when she was about 10 years old and her grandfather died.

"He was sitting on his front porch in his rocking chair and said, Do you all hear that music? Oh, it's so pretty,'" she said. "A few minutes later he just closed his eyes."

She said he remained a gentleman even after the hardships he faced in battle.

"Everybody liked Grandpa. He was such a likable man," she said.

This is the second project completed by the council since its charter. Its first project was to provide lunch for the descendents of original families of the Helena community.

More projects of community interest are planned.

The Women's Civic Council meets on the first Thursday of each month at 11 a.m. for a potluck lunch at the Helena Community Center. Membership is open to any female in the community. Call (228) 475-2229 for details.
