Purl, one of Greene County's oldest citizens, died at his home 1 mile southwest of this city on Saturday last (Feb. 21 - age 78, per another short article) after an illness of several months. He was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania on Dec. 15, 1812. In moving westward from the place of his birth, he lived some time in Indiana. He moved thence to Scott County where he lived a short time. In 1859, he moved to the home near Carrollton where he lived until his death. Some seven years since he was stricken with paralysis, from which he partially recovered. About 4 years ago he was stricken and was helpless ever after. he was the father of 12 children, 4 of whom preceded him to the grave. Those living are Mrs. Caroline Tunnell, Miss Alice, Gilbert L. and Oliver, of this city, W.H. of Litchfield, Taylor of Jonesburg, Mo., Fillmore of Wakaruse, Kansas and J.C. of Topeka. Funeral from the M.E. church on Monday last, conducted by Rev. M.A. Hewes. Mr. Purl was an industrious citizen and leaves a large estate, which he has disposed of to his children by will."

"Judgement: "2/26/1876 - The Bell Mills were sold last Tuesday by A.M. Cunningham, assignee of F.M. Bell & Son. B.B. Bartholomew of Greenfield was the auctioneer. The undivided half of the firm in Mill & fixtures was sold for $700 to Peter Roodhouse. The lots in New Providence were sold to one & another at $1 & $2 each. The other half interest belongs to Hank Tunnison. The total sale amounted to $807.75. The $300 judgement of Thomas C. Purl and $100 of Samuel Levy, Carrollton, are to be paid in full and it is supposed the other $12,000 in debts will realize 2 1/2 cents on the dollar."
