The Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans: Volume II:
"CARRINGTON, Paul, statesman, was born in Virginia, March 16, 1733; son of George and Anne (Mayo) Carrington, and grandson of Dr. Paul and Henningham (Codrington) Carrington.

About 1748 he went to the part of Lunenburg which afterwards became Charlotte county, Va., and studied law under Col. Clement Read. He began to practice in 1754, and was licensed in 1755. He was married, Oct. 1, 1755, to Margaret, daughter of Col. Clement Read, and in 1756 he was appointed king's attorney of Bedford county. He was made major of militia in 1761, and colonel in 1764. He represented Charlotte county in the house of burgesses from its formation in March, 1765, until 1775. In 1772 he became county lieutenant and presiding justice of Charlotte county, and in the same year was clerk of Halifax county. He was a member of all the conventions from 1774 to 1776, and was chairman of the Charlotte county committee which endorsed the resolutions of the late Continental Congress. He was also a member of the first and second state committees of safety, 1775-76. On Jan. 23, 1778, he was elected judge of the first general court, and filled the office until 1807. He died at Charlotte county, Va., Jan. 23, 1818."

Volume IV Chapter X The Pendleton Family. Third Generation.: "On a question touching the true meaning of an act of Assembly, or the laws of prize, the opinion of Pendleton would have had its proper weight with the body; but when the safety of the State, or the honour of the Soldier and a gentleman was involved, would George Mason, who had recently paid to Henry the most splendid compliment that one man of genius ever paid to another; would John Page, who, alone of all the Council of Dunmore, refused to assent to the proclamation denouncing Henry; would Richard Bland, Thomas Ludwell Lee, Paul Carrington, Dudley Digges, William Cabell, Carter Braxton, James Mercer, and John Tabb, have been guided at such a delicate crisis by a feeling of envy towards a patriot, who, having distinguished himself in the public councils, sought to win honour in another and more dangerous field? On the contrary, if we are disposed to attribute the conduct of Pendleton and his associates to individual jealousy and the desire to ruin the fortunes of a dreaded rival, would they not have adopted an opposite course and have dispatched Henry, unacquainted as he was with war, through a hostile population to the seaboard, where the British forces, which had been recruited some days before by a reinforcement of regular troops from St. Augustine, were ready to receive him!"

"Their eldest child, Paul Carrington, married, as we have already said, the daughter of Colonel Clement Read, of Lunenburg,--now Charlotte,--who left a memory of great virtues. Their children were Paul, Clement, George, Mary, and Anne.

The elder Paul Carrington was married a second time, to Miss Priscilla Sims. Two of their children died in infancy. The rest were Henry, Robert, Letitia, and Martha.

A very interesting account is given of this, the elder Carrington, in Mr. Grigsby's book,--the Convention of 1776. He was a member of that body, and filled various departments of duty during the Revolutionary struggle, while furnishing three sons to the army, two of whom were eminently distinguished. He was an able lawyer in his day, and after the close of the war was promotod to the General Court, and then to the Court of Appeals, where he was associated with his old friend, Edmund Pendleton, from whom he seldom if ever differed on all the great questions which came before them during the scenes of the Revolution. Agreeing with Pendleton on the subject of religion and in attachment to the Episcopal Church, when the question of the constitutionality of the law for selling the glebes came before the Court of Appeals, we find them united in giving their voice against the law. Mr. Grigsby informs us that "in middle life, and until the war of the Revolution was past, he was of a grave turn. Before the troubles began he had lost the bride of his youth. During the war, and when the Southern States were almost the reconquered Colonies of Britain, he was never seen to smile. Day succeeded day in his domestic life, and not only was no smile seen to play upon his face, but hardly a word fell from his lips. He was almost overwhelmed with the calamities which assailed his country. But his latter years were cheered by its prosperity and glory. He died in the eighty-sixth year of his age."
