William GARRARD

1 Jan 1760 - 1839

ID Number: I64914

  • OCCUPATION: Rev War
  • RESIDENCE: Stafford Co. VA & Chester Co. SC & GA & KY & abt 1811 IL
  • BIRTH: 1 Jan 1760, Stafford Co. Virginia
  • DEATH: 1839, Crawford Co. Illinois
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1780] [S2454]
Father: William GARRARD "the Immigrant"
Mother: Elizabeth MOSS

Family 1 : Ruth SHARP?

Notes

BIOGRAPHY: From "History of Crawford Co.," published 1980. "William Garrard, Sr., was born in Stafford Co., VA, 1/1/1760. He moved to Chester Co., SC, from which county he entered the Colonial Army in the Revolutionary War. From Chester Co. he moved to Georgia where he stayed 10 mos. From GA he moved to KY where he stayed 4 yrs. He came to IL from KY, probably in 1811, where he settled SW of Palestine. William Garrard Sr.'s wife was named Ruth. We have record of one daughter, Margaret and three sons, Jacob, William, and John. Margaret married John Martin. William Garrard Sr. received a pension of $23.33 per year. It was to start 3/4/1831. He died between 9/1838 and 3/1839. He is probably buried in the Palestine Cemetery. He entered this land in 1814. Margaret (Garrard) McColpin and her husband John Martin are buried in this cemetery...." We now know he was buried near Palestine, but not in the Palestine Cemetery.

William Garrard Sr., Margeret's father, and her brother, William Garrard Jr., are listed as Garrett in the 1820 Crawford County census.

For some reason alot of Garrard researchers assume our William was descended from the Col.Wm Garrard of Stafford Co,VA and md. Mary NAUGHTY. I have not found any reason to believe this!!! He (Wm b/1760) most likely is related to the above Wm Garrard but as a cousin.

Crawford Co., IL, Record of Wills Book 1, pages 92-94, Will of William Garrard dated 5/13/1840.

ID Number: I72151

  • RESIDENCE: Albemarle now Amherst and Patrick Cos. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1710, Ireland or Albemarle Co. Virginia
  • DEATH: BEF 8 Aug 1791, Patrick Co. Virginia
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2753]

Family 1 :
  1. +Sarah Jane SMALL

Notes

Spouse: Margaret. "Source: Margaret Behnke "The first record I found of John Small in Albemarle County is a record of his daughter, Martha's baptism. The book "Tinkling Springs, Headwaters of Freedom" by Wilson ,lists this baptism at the Rockfish Meeting House by the Rev. Craig. Rev. Craig was assigned to the Tinkling Springs Meeting House in Augusta County, but he served several congregations on both sides of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Rockfish Meeting House in Albemarle County was assigned its own Presbyterian Minister in 1747. Martha Small, daughter of John Small was baptized, March 8, 1741."

"John Small came to Patrick Co. with his family, two sons, Matthew and Henry, both veterans of the Revolution. He died in 1791. His son Henry died shortly after the Revolution, apparently due to causes from that conflict. His son Matthew moved on to Wayne Co., KY, and later to Marion Co., TN; and his descendants spread out south and westward to the Pacific coast.

---April 1795 - Deed Book 1 page 348.
Thomas Morrow Sr. and Matthew Small as Executors of John Small, dec'd sold to James Denney: 410 acres on the waters of Jills Creek in 3 Patents: beginning with old survey dated 11-18-1773, Waltons Line. New surveys dated 5-3-1780, 5-4-1780, 5-4-1784.
[NOTE: It is probably safe to assume that John Small's wife Margaret died before this. His will left her his property during her life, and then to her children, so the fact that the executors sold the balance of his land in Patrick County in 1795 probably signifies that she was deceased.
This is the only time I have found Thomas Morrow signing his name as "SR.". He probably had a son named Thomas who became of age about this time. He had not used the term JR before so I don't believe that it signifies that his father was Thomas also, and had died." Source: Margaret Behnke]."
