Enoch COMBS

ABT 1660 - ____

ID Number: I24331

Family 1 : Sarah SPRIGG

Notes

"By 1658 Phillip COMBES, William HOWGATE (or HEWGATE) and John FITZMARSH (or TITMARSH) were transported to Maryland by Thomas STONE (See Charles County... not same reference as above).

Thomas STONE is apparently (1) the son of Maryland Governor William and Verlinda GRAVES Stone of Charles County; (2) the nephew of Katherine GRAVES whose husband Thomas SPRIGGS, Sr. married 2nd Elinor NUTTHALL, d/o John NUTTHALL I of Accomack and Northumberland Counties, Virginia, and St. Mary's County, Maryland; and (3) the first cousin of Sarah SPRIGG (d/o Thomas and Katherine GRAVES Sprigg) who married (1) John PEARCE; and (2) Enoch COOMES (Jr.?) of Prince George's County. (See also below)

22 Jan 1717/8 - 22 Apr 1718 (Prince George's County Land records, Folio 51/583) Indenture, 22, Jan 1717. From Daniel DANIELSON, planter and Thomas SPRIGG , Gent. Both of Prince George's County, to Enoch COOMBS of Prince George's County a parcel of land called Norway, part of a larger tract called Largo; bounded by land belonging to Robert WELLS called Westphalia and land of Thomas SPRIGG; containing 250 Acres /s/ Daniel DANIELSON (seal), Tho. SPRIGG (seal). Wits: Tho. CLAGGETT. Jos. BELT, Tho. SPRIGG, Sr., Ja. HADDOCK. Enoch COMBS paid 102/10/0 on date of purchase. Acknowledged by Thomas SPRIGG , Daniel DANIELSON and his wife Elizabeth; enrolled 22 Apr 1718. (Land Records of Prince George's County, 1726-1730, Folio 51/583, provided by Combs-Clark Researcher Jerry Clark)

A possible father: Enoch COMBS, Sr. who had transported himself, wife, Barbary and son, Enoch COMBS, Jr. by Nov 1663 when he appears in the records of Talbot County. Also Note that Richard PRESTON'S petition, particularly given that he was a leading Quaker, and the jury's verdict, are worthwhile reading. See Maryland Archives, Vol. 49:8, for full transcript.
20 Mar 1664/5 - 19 Oct 1665 Enoch COMBS demanded land on 20 Mar 1664, for transportation of himself, wife Barbara, son Enoch, and Ann HAWTIN (servant), sworn to before Thomas TRUMAN, Deputy Commissioner. Then, "Upon the aforegoing assignment George LINGAN had warrant for 300 acres dated the 8th day of April, 1665, returned 19th day of October, 1665." (Fanny Gough Manuscript)
Even though the above record does not include the county, George LINGAN was a resident of Calvert (per both earlier and later records herein)."
