  7.  Catherine Temple GWATHMEY

Notes

"ANN CLARK GWATHMEY, Whose portrait will be found in the frontispiece to this chapter, was the eldest sister of General George Rogers Clark. She was born in Virginia and became the wife of Owen Gwathmey in about the eighteenth year of her age. He was for a short time a soldier in the Revolutionary War, but removed west soon after and settled at, or near, Louisville, where he became a successful business man. They raised a large family of children, and among their descendants will be found the names of several persons of distinction. It is notable that three of their children, viz., John, Samuel and Ann, married three of the children of Colonel William Aylett Booth and his wife, Rebecca Hite, viz.: Ann, Mary and William. The mother was a sister of General Jonathan Clark's wife."

Samuel Gwathmey, the husband of Mary Booth, was one of the trustees who laid off the town of Jeffersonville in 1802, and was long a resident of that place, and intimately connected with early Indiana history. He was appointed clerk of Clark county, Indiana territory, in 1801 and treasurer in 1802. He was a member of the first legislative council of Indiana territory, and further mention will be made of him in that connection. He held a number of offices, and on one occasion, at least, held two at the same time, which caused a curious question to arise, as to whether he could properly be the custodian of his own bond. He referred the matter to General John Gibson, the secretary of the territory, in an interesting letter, now before the author, and its tone clearly shows the nice sense of honor and propriety of the man.

He was an Episcopalian in religion, a man of high character, fine business qualifications, and was long the president of a bank in Louisville. He was the first register of the land office at Jeffersonville, and held it until he was removed by General Jackson for political reasons. He was the owner of slaves in Indiana during the territorial period. He had five children, Marie, William, Balor H., Rebecca and Mary Eliza. Rebecca became the wife of Henry Tyler and mother of Henry S. Tyler, at present mayor of Louisville (1895). Samuel Gwathmey died in 1850, in the seventy-second year of his age.

John Gwathmey, the other son, was also a man of fine business qualifications and the author has in his possession many of his letters, some of them of historic interest in relation to early events about the falls, and especially about Jeffersonville and other parts of Clark's Grant."

Descendants of Ann Clark (Eldest sister of George Rogers Clark) and Owen Gwathmey.

Children: John; Temple; Samuel; Diana Moore; Ann (married Wm. Booth, no children); Elizabeth; Benjamin and Lucy (twins); George; Isaac R.; Frances Matilda; Catharine.

CONFLICT: Assumed Wife of William Sandidge. Did he marry an Ann? Ann Taylor, Ann Pendleton, or Ann Pulliam? In a publication by Paul Sandidge York, M.D., Glasgow, KY, 1947 entitled Sandidge Family Notes or Sandidge Family Genealogical References. " William Sandidge, presumed to be the son of John Sandidge (2) and grandson of James Sandidge(1).

Richmond Times-Dispatch Genealogical Column, Feb. 1, 1914, "Taylor-Sandidge" by Elmore Dickinson, Professor at West Virginia University, states as follows:
William Sandidge of Caroline Co. Married Ann Taylor, d. of John Taylor and his wife Catherine Pendleton, d. of Philip & Isabella (Hart) Pendleton, son of Henry of Norwich, England. James Taylor (i) of Carlisle, England, settled in King & Queen Co., Va, before 1650.

James Taylor's 2nd marriage was to Mary Gregory. The issue from this marriage as follows: John and Ann, twins; John died young. Mary, Edward, Elizabeth and another John (ii). This last John (ii) married Catherine Pendleton, and had Mary Catherine, Ann (iii) , Edmund, Isabella, John, James, Philip, Elizabeth, William and Joseph. Edmund Pendleton, brother of Ann (iii) was famous as a statesman in Colonial Virginia".

William Sandidge(3), b. ?, d. 1746, and wife Ann Taylor (iii) b. 1712-15 d. after 1754 (date unknown at present)."

According to family Bible in possession of one Mr. Trist Wild of New Orleans, Ann Taylor died unmarried.

Ann Pulliam, Dau of William Pullam-Pulliam, New Kent Co. VA, son of James Pulliam of Henrico Co. VA, son of Edward Pulliam, b in England 1600 came to VA in 1636.

Pulliam name was used repeatedly in William Sandidge and Ann's children.

Spouse: Joseph Martin , Sr, Cap Disc #27 Pin #384223
Spouse: William Pulliam Disc #27 Pin #394685

Spotsylvania county court records has this:
June 28, 1755 Joseph and John Pulliam officiate and give notice to James, William, David, and John Sandidge for the marriage bond of Ann Sandidge (widow of William Sandidge) to marry Joseph Martin of Louisa co Va. Joseph and John are names of brothers of Ann.
James through John are the sons of William and Anne.
this is all I found in short time but pretty good indication Ann and Pulliam related.

William, b 1698, marryied in 1734 to
13yr-old Ann Taylor -- but Ann Taylor didn't die until Aug 10, 1761 Louisa Co, VA which would mean that Jun 28, 1754 marriage to Ann Pulliam would be a 2nd marriage, illegal marriage, or possibly someone else by same name (such as his son, David or William -- going by memory here) marrying Ann Pulliam
-- in this other person's records that is what he/she put.

Considering the dates of birth of William's children this "sounds" reasonable -- have you ever found anything to this effect? I know I haven't found the 1734 marriage (yet).

Don't know who this was that supposedly found this -- it was on FTM #3128

I haven't EVER seen that "officiating" used in a pre-marital application, banns or for a person who is related (unless they really WERE officiating at the actual marriage and all dictionaries -- even from that era used officiating as the person who
PERFORMED the marriage ceremony).

According to family Bible in possession of one Mr. Trist Wiid of New Orleans, Ann Taylor died unmarried.

Also I am looking for information about Stephen Sandridge born
~1752 in Albemarle County or Spotsylvania county. He was the
son of Willliam Sandridge II and Elizabeth Graves Sandridge.
He married Sarah (Sallie) Henderson Sandridge. I would llike
to find out the names of her parents.

thier daughter Sallie married Peter Eades in 1803 in Albemarle
County Va. Does anyone know anyhting about Peter Eades - his
parents or where he was from?

Ann sandidge's daughter Mary married Anthony Gholson jr. Anthony Gholson sr. purchased land from James Taylor who married first Fransis Walker? and second Mary Gregory who married a Thomas after James' death.

Linda Eades refers to several documents that "say they prove" ann is Ann Pulliam.
If anyone has access to these documents, would they check and inform us about the contents. Because something is written in an article, we all know, does not mean it is true. Also, because some researcher "thought so" doesn';t make fact. I hope someone with access to the records linda has eluded to will check this out.

One connection between Ann and the Pulliams is the Hollidays that were on the est. records of William. I think it was two sisters married Pulliams. Also Ann sandidge son married a Pulliam. By memory, i am thinking this was david. Was this Anna pulliam a daughter of Ann sandidge brother? That may be where the proof is.

I live in Arkansas but grew up 3 miles from the missouri border. I always like to say 'Show me" don't just tell me. It has turned out to be pretty good advise in life not just in genealogy.

I really like the Sandidge list and enjoy all of the posts; even though, my last sandidge is Ann who married William Sandidge.

I would like for everyone to check to see what proof we have that William Sandidge married Ann Pulliam. I have checked and I have no proofs, just reference to it. Before 1947, many believed that William married Ann Taylor, daughter of John Taylor and granddaughter of James Taylor. This is of much interest to me as James Taylors daughter Sarah married Robert Powell of Caroline Co. If William did in fact marry Ann Taylor instead of Ann Pulliam, I would have a connection to the Robert Powell line who had a son named Charles. This Charles son would be the one that married Sarah Gholson, daughter of Mary Sandidge and Anthony Gholson, jr..
I have found one reference that said the reason that Ann was not Ann Taylor is a Bible record was found and that Ann Taylor was too old to be the one marrying William Sandidge and than Ann died unmarried. She was a twin. and one record I have found said she was probably a Holliday. Sarah Taylor. Robert deeded land to Charles Powell. my Powell line is at www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/5792 after she married Joseph Martin. he died in Albemarle Co, va in 1767, leaving a will. it says there are minor children. Could Ann and Joseph had children. Ann had Mary Sandidge about 1720. She married Joseph Martin in 1754/55 i think.

Mr. W. E. Dickinson researched the Sandidge line in the early 1900s. He stated that William m. Ann the daughter of John Taylor and Catherine Pendleton. His articles are found in the Va. State Library volumes of the Times Dispatch, Richmond, va. Since the death of Mr. Dickinson, it has been proven that Ann was not Ann Taylor. Ann as described died unmarried as shown by Bible records and Mr. Trist Wood of New Orleans has a copy of these records. The question remains open as to maiden name of Ann Wife of William Sandidge and Joseph Martin. Some think her name may have been Holliday. Ann's second husband Joseph Martin died in Albemarle co. in 1767 leaving a will and naming wife Ann and many children NOT OF AGE. When William Sandidge died Anns bondsmen were Benjamin and Joseph Holliday of Spotsylvania co. William Sandidge and wife ann and Geoge Musick and his wife ann deed to William Trustee the son in law of george musick who married their daughter, Elizabeth 65 acres. 50 of this belonged to musick and 15 to william and ann.

The above I am quoting from an old article i found from a Sandidge researcher. i think i have the name somewhere. the date was post 1950. Who was george musick? who was william trustee? who were benjamin and joseph holliday? did ann have any children by her second husband? has anyone read joseph martins will? betty
