Notes

From Southern Branches by Pat M Stevens IV on Gencircles.com

"The early line shown in these notes is formulated from the work of Marguerite Evans Mathews, a Floyd descendant. See notes within for more on this. I have also reviewed and added (and commented on where necessary) the work of Anna Margaret Cartlidge, typed but unpublished in Baltimore in 1966. B. Franklin Reinauer of New Jersey was kind to give me a copy of her manuscript. Anna is very thorough and accurate and has caused me to reverse at least one depiction I had from my own line.

I start this line with John Floyd because we have no idea who preceded him, or even whether he was born in Virginia or, perhaps, in Wales.

There are a number of Floyds in 17th century Virginia. The John Floyd depicted here is possibly related in some way to the alleged "Floyd brothers" who came early to Virginia. By 1675, William, Charles, and Frederick were settled in Accomac Co., and already in Virginia were Nathaniel on his 850 acres in Northampton and Accomac and Walter on 400 acres in Martin's Hundred. Some say they-- Nathaniel and Walter-- were brothers. We know that Nathaniel's acreage was patented on November 20, 1637, based on headrights granted for transporting seventeen people: "Christ. Denn, Robert Leaderd, Wm. Moyses, Ambrose Procter, Tho. Weare, Robt. Barton, Rober Joyce, Mathew Tomlin, Jon. Cox, Rich Redock, David Hopkins, Flug Floyd, Wm. Cox, Katherin Folder, Rich. Carter, John. Gillett, Christ. Thomas." (For this David Mordy who kindly gave me these names credits: Nell Marion Nugent, 'Cavaliers and Pioneers, Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants 1623-1666,' Volume One, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1983.) Dave Mordy adds that "I think... that Nathaniell Floid came over on the Bona Nova belonging to the Virginia Company before 1624 and that some years later he transported 17 people for which he received an 850 acre land patent. He adds: "...as I read Hotten's 'Persons of Quality,' Nathaniell Floid was one of Mr. Edward Blaney's men who came in the Bona Nova. Nothing seems to be stated as to whether he was owner of a ship, master of a ship, or an indentured servant. As to the Bona Nova, is this the same ship that was owned by the Virginia Company that also owned the Mayflower? In Alexander Brown's book, The First Republic in America (1898) there are some possibly pertinent items:

p. 328 The Bona Nova arrived in Va. 4 Dec 1619 with the news that Edwin Sandys succeeded Thomas Smythe as Treasurer of the Virginia Company.
p. 335 On 29 May 1619 there was a commission to the Bona Nova, John Jonson, master, to go to Virginia.
p. 344 Mr. Deputy Farrar's ship, the Bona Nova sailed in Aug 1619 w. 120 persons
p. 370 The Bona Nova arrived in Va. 4 Dec 1619 w 50 tentants for the college lands & 50 for company's land.
p. 375 The Bona Nova returned to England, leaving Va. early spring 1620.
p. 387 The Bona Nova of 200 tons sent by the Va. Company to Va. --arrived in Va. in the winter of 1620-21, prob. in Jan....
p. 417 The Bona Nova returned to England in the spring of 1621.

"The American genealogy sources that I have seen indicate that Nathaniel Floyd made a number of trips in the Bona Nova-- if this is true, it would be nice if there were some research on the other side of the water bearing this out. I am under the impression that the British kept good records about their ships, but have no idea how difficult it is to do research in this area."

Whether Our John Floyd is any relation to Walter is not known. Brice Claggett suggests (in Anna Cartlidge's 1966 work) that John arrived in Va. in 1660 from Wales. Marguerite finds a John Ffloyd arriving in 1660:

" 'At court holden 30th July 1660, a certificate is granted to Mr. John Wilcocks for ye transportation of 20 persons into this County whose names follow (1000 acres).' John Flfoyd [sic] was among the twenty (Virginia Magazine of History & Biography, Vol. XXVIII, No. 2, Apr. 1920). In August 1666, John Floyd was on the "List of Tithables" in Northampton County (VA Magazine of History & Biography, Vol. X, No. 3, Jan. 1902). In 1668, John Floyd was granted land in Northampton County, Virginia. In 1681 & 1687, he received patents for land on Hogg Island; again in 1687 for land on Prout's Island."

I think the most likely relationship is that John Floyd of Northampton Co. was perhaps somehow related to Nathaniel or Walter, the first settlers, and either born in Virginia or came later in 1660 as Claggett says. If this be true, then Colonel John Floyd born in 1750 was already preceded by several generations of Floyds in the Virginia colony.... and I have come to believe the tie is through Colonel John's father William to William's father John as I have depicted in these notes.

John's 1687 will names the children shown below. Anna Cartlidge (AMC) cites it being at Northampton Co., Will Book (WB) 12:293-294. Marguerite shares this: "On 02 April 1687, John Floyd/LLoyd/FFloyd, made his Will (Northampton Co., VA, Order Bk. 12 - Wills 1683-1689 Vol. XV p. 294-295; this citation stands - exactly as I read it at the Eastville Courthouse): 'In the name of God Amen ... I John Ffloyd of the County of Northampton being sick in body but of perfect mind and memory calling to mind the uncertain Estate of this transitory life and that all flesh must yield unto death when it shall please God to call ... I bequeath unto my loving wife Mary two feather bedds and bolsters and what furniture there is ...' He devised to Mary life use of one-third of the plantation, and she was co-executor with son John. He further stipulated that the remainder of his estate be divided equally among his widow, Mary, and his six children (John or John Jr., Charles, Berry, Matthew, Sarah, Esther - in the order they are listed in the Will)"
