Rev. Alexander BALMAINE

ABT 1750 - ____

ID Number: I16456

  • TITLE: Rev.
  • OCCUPATION: Episcopal Minister
  • RESIDENCE: Orange Co. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1750
  • RESOURCES: See: [S96] [S500] [S662] [S2916]

Family 1 : Lucy TAYLOR

Notes

Performed Marriage Ceremony Of James Madison & Dolly Todd.

"From a private record kept at the time, I also learn that the congregation in Orange, in the year 1786, engaged the services of Mr. Waddell, the blind Presbyterian minister, to preach for them for two years. He officiated at the Brick Church. There was no Episcopal clergyman here at the time. It appears that forty pounds were subscribed for him, and it was expected the subscription would reach sixty pounds. The Rev. Mr. Balmaine was here occasionally at that period, addressing Miss Lucy Taylor, whom he married on the 31st day of October, 1786. He preached and administered the ordinances from time to time, both before and after his marriage. On one occasion, when Mr. Waddell preached, we observe he gave notice that he would preach and administer the Lord's Supper on the following Sunday."

Notes

John may have married a second time in Natchez to Parmelia Garnhart in the 1830s. I found his death record in Catholic church records of Baton Rouge Diocese. He died while working on a riverboat in 1837. Two days later Seth married Mary his dau and his widow Parmelia married James S. Purl.

"In 1840 Catholic services were held in the upper floor of the old market house and after it was burned by the Yankees, in private houses or the courthouse."27 For many years the Catholics from across the river brought their deceased members to the high bluff for burial, but not until 1871 was a church organized on the hill. Gen. P. T. G. Beauregard drew the plans for the church and construction began that year. The congregation was very small and it was not until 1893 that sufficient funds were available for its completion." 27 Butler, Louise, "West Feliciana and a Glimpse of its History" Louisiana Historical Quarterly, Vol. 7- No. 1, p. 90, Pub. February 1925.

I am looking for info on John H. Monroe b.ca.1776 and d.1837 in West Feliciana Parish, LA. His obituary says his family was in Cincinnati, OH at the time. His daughter was Mary M.C. Monroe who married Seth W. Pearl. She was born ca.1824 in Winchester, Frederick Co. Her mother was Catherine Craig.
