Notes

Edgar the Peaceful, King of England: Edgar was born 943. He married Elfrida 965. Edgar died 975 at 32 years of age.

"THE REIGN OF KING EDGAR (959-75) 'It is a sign of Edgar's competence as a ruler that his reign is singlularly devoid of recorded incident' (Stenton, in A1, p. 368). See also Fisher (A5), pp. 272-81; John (G11), pp. 185-9; Stafford (G10), pp. 50-6; Keynes, in G12. There may yet be something to be learnt about domestic events from the attestations in King Edgar's charters (B331).

Contemporary impressions of Edgar's rule: Athelwold of Winchester, in EHD no. 238; Lantfred of Winchester, in Q210; Wulfstan of Winchester, in his 'Life' of Athelwold, ch. 13, in B172, p. 24; ’lfric of Eynsham, in EHD no. 239 (g) and (i); Byrhtferth of Ramsey, in B175; Wulfstan of York, in ASC MSS. DE, s.a. 959.

For a ravaging of Wales in 967, see Williams (B70), pp. 19-20. For Edgar's initiative in summoning a council at Winchester, see G108. On Edgar's (?'long-deferred' or ?second) coronation, at Bath, in 973, see Stenton (A1), p. 358; Fisher (A5), p. 280; Nelson (M65), pp. 63-70; Jones, (G141); etc. For the related events at Chester, see Alfric, in EHD no. 239 (g); ASC, MSS. DE, s.a. 973; John of Worcester (B630), pp. 422-4; William of Malmesbury (B620), pp. 238-40. For Roger of Wendover's allusion to King Edgar's reform of the coinage, see EHD no. 4, s.a. 975, and B650. For the coinage itself, see Dolley and Metcalf (M125), Petersson (M126), and Stewart (M125), etc.

Later accounts of King Edgar's 'peaceful' rule, by Anglo-Norman historians: John of Worcester (B630), pp. 408-28, including his fleet, pp. 424-6; William of Malmesbury (B620), pp. 238-62; Henry of Huntingdon (B635), pp. 318-22.

The Monastic Reform Movement: The origins of the movement lay at the court of King Athelstan; the opening stages were a minor feature of the reigns of Edmund and Eadred; and what in retrospect became the movement itself was a major aspect of the reign of King Edgar.

Bishop Athelwold's account of 'King Edgar's Establishment of Monasteries' (EEM), written apparently to accompany his translation of the Rule of St Benedict. An authoritative but naturally partisan manifesto of the reform movement, setting it in its wider (Insular) context; written after 975 (Whitelock), or perhaps in the mid-960s (Gretsch). Manuscript: Ker (B800), no. 154, art. 4. Text and translation: B401, no. 33, pp. 142-54. Translation: EHD no. 238. Discussion: Gretsch (G208), pp. 226-33 (authorship of the translation of the Rule, and of EEM) and 233-60 (date of the translation of the Rule, and of EEM).

'The Benedictional of St ’thelwold' (BL Add. 49598), containing formulas or blessings recited by a bishop during the course of solemn mass and on other special occasions, written (according to a prefatory poem) by a scribe called Godeman, probably in the early 970s, for ’thelwold's personal use. For a full account of the manuscript and its spectacular decoration, see Deshman (G245); see also Gretsch (G208), pp. 296-310. For Godeman's poem, see Lapidge (G200), in ASE 4, pp. 105-6, or in T19, pp. 143-4; translated in Deshman (G245), p. 148.

[G110] Bishop ’thelwold's account of 'King Edgar's Establishment of Monasteries' (EEM), written apparently to accompany his translation of the Rule of St Benedict. 226-33 (authorship of the translation of the Rule, and of EEM) and 233-60 (date of the translation of the Rule, and of EEM)."

Edgar of England From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Edgar the Peaceful
Rank: 13th
Ruled: October 1, 959-July 8, 975
Predecessor: Edwy
Date of Birth: 943
Place of Birth: Wessex, England
Wives: Ethelfleda and Elfrida
Buried: Winchester Cathedral
Date of Death: July 8, 975
Parents: Edmund I and Elgiva

King Edgar (about 942-July 8, 975) was the younger son of King Edmund I of England. He won the nickname, "the Peaceable", but in fact was a stronger king than his brother, Edwy, from whom he took the kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia in 958. He officially succeeded Edwy as king of England in 959. It was his decision to appoint Dunstan (eventually canonised as St. Dunstan) as Archbishop of Canterbury, but it is alleged that Dunstan at first refused to crown Edgar because he disapproved of his way of life.

Edgar was eventually crowned at Bath in 973, and this service, devised by Dunstan himself, forms the basis of the present-day British coronation ceremony. Edgar had several children. He died on July 8, 975 at Winchester, and is buried at Glastonbury. He was succeeded by his son, King Edward the Martyr.

Src: Heltonville, Ind, newspaper article states log cabin was built in 1820 by Edmund Terrill, stood by Indian trail that led from Leesville to an Indian camp by Henderson Creek. He was killed & scalped & they then went to his cabin where Sarah escaped by jumping out an upstairs window wrapped in a feather bed. They found a 12 year old girl hiding & took her with them. She later escaped & returned home. Cabin was
torn down about 1941 but the corner stones were still visible in 1979. Land was owned by Margaret Eddinton, RR 1, Box 364, Heltonville at the writing of the article. Land appears to be adjacent to that of John Kerby's.
