Granville Smith (son of Francis Smith -see ante page 2319), of
Hanover, Louisa, Chesterfield, Goochland and Montgomery
Counties; born circa, 1758 * ; died, 1811 . He was a student at
William and Mary College in 1776 .
He is recorded as from Louisa County and left college to enter
the Revolutionary War.* August 11, 1777 , Granville Smith was
commissioned first lieutenant of a company of militia formed
from the student body of William and Mary College for service
with the Virginia troops.* On February 16, 1780 , he was
commissioned Ensign, State Garrison Regiment, and served as
quartermaster to Colonel Porterfield, Quartermaster General of
the State. In 1781 Smith was also deputy quartermaster.*
"Council Chamber, 13th April, 1784 .
I do certify that Granville Smith is entitled to the proportion
of land allowed an Ensign of the State Line for three years
service.

"A warrant for 2666 2/3 acres issued to Granville Smith April
15th, 1784 ."*
After the termination of his service in the Revolutionary Army
Granville Smith returned to Hanover County where he was residing
in December, 1783 . On December 16, 1783 , Granville Smith , of
Hanover County , purchased of John Fowler and the Trustees of
John Fowler , the younger, 250 acres of land in Chesterfield
County , on the north side of Falling Creek . (See ante page
2167.) After the purchase of this land Granville Smith removed
to Chesterfield County where it appears he was living as early
as 1791 * and as late as 1795 . After this date he moved to
Goochland County and from Goochland (where he was living in
November, 1806 , when he made his will), to Montgomery County
where he died in 1811 .*
Granville Smith (circa 1758-1811 ) married Ann Pasteur ,
daughter of Blouet (or Blouette) Pasteur , of Williamsburg,
Virginia . (See Pasteur ante page 2285) and had issue:
1. William P. Smith married _ Moore and died without issue.
2. Susanne Preston Smith , died in infancy.
3. Francis Linnaeus Smith , died unmarried.
4. Lysander Smith , died unmarried.
5. Louisa Adelaide Smith , died unmarried.
6. Harriet Smith , died unmarried.
7. Granville Smith married Marianna Lilburn Pleasants (1792-1865
) daughter of Governor James Pleasants , of Virginia , and had
issue: (a) James Smith , died infancy; (b) William Smith , died
unmarried in 1883 ; (c) Adelaide Preston Smith (born Sept. 9,
1815 ), married July 31, 1833 , Doctor Samuel Hobson Royall , of
Nottoway County ; (d) John Newton Smith , died unmarried; (e)
Susan Ross Smith ; (f) Granville Smith , died 1883 .
8. Preston Smith , of Powhatan County ; died unmarried.
9. Marcellus Smith married Marcella Pleasants , daughter of
Governor James Pleasants , of Virginia , and had issue:
(a) Caroline Smith married James Morris , of Green Spring,
Louisa County ; (b) Marcellus Smith ; (c) Linnaeus Smith ; (d)
Granville Smith ; (e) James Smith .
10. Ann Maria Smith married John Thomas Pleasants , son of
Samuel Pleasants , of Fine Creek, Powhatan County . (See
Pleasants family, ante page 2299.)
11. Tarlton Pleasants Smith married Gabriella Forloine , and had
issue:
(a) Elizabeth Smith married _ Leake , of Henrico County ; (b)
Nannie Smith ; (c) Thomas Smith ; (d) Granville Smith ; (e)
Pasteur Smith .
