"Papia is said to have been the daughter of Berengar, a Breton count, by a lady of the Breton comital/ducal house. I first found this descent in Walther Kienast, _Der Herzogstitel in Frankreich und Deutschland, 9 bis 12 Jahrhundert_ (Munich, 1968)--LC shelfmark CR 3944.K5." John Parsons
"The Vermandois relationship comes through the reported
relationship between Duke Richard I and Bernard de Senlis, who
was (until recently) thought to be a male-line descendant of the
Vermandois. Richard is called Bernard's nephew, in one source,
so that would presumably make Richard's mother Sprota sister of
Bernard and a member of the Vermandois. However, another source
makes Sprota's husband, William Longsword nephew of Bernard, and
hence the connection was through Richard's grandother, Poppa.
This latter has played into Keats-Rohan's recent reconstruction
of Poppa's ancestry, showing her as a relative of
the Vermandois. That Poppa was the Vermandois relative is more
likely. Sprota was nothing more than a captive mistress of
William, and her parentage is unknown, perhaps even to William."
