1st Earl of Westmorland. He took part in the Earl of Buckingham's expedition to Brittany, where he was knighted at St. Omer in July 1380. he succeeded his father on 17 Oct 1388, and was summoned to parliament from 6 Dec 1389, by writs directed Radulpho de Nevyll de Raby. From 1389 till 1424 he was continually employed on the Border in negotiating truces and peace with Scotland. He was created Earl of Westmoreland on 29 Sep 1397. His near alliance to the House of Lancaster, being son-in-law of John of Gaunt, led him to forsake the King, and take a prominent part in the elevation of Henry of Bolingbroke, the exiled Duke of Lancaster, to the throne as King Henry IV.

He married a 2nd time before 20 Feb 1397 to Joan Beaufort, widow of Robert Ferrers, 2nd Baron of Wemme. His second wife, on whom the lordships of Middleham and Sheriff-Hutton, with other extensive lands, were settled, left them to her eldest son, Richard, Earl of Salisbury. This caused a feud between her and her sons on the one side, and the grandsons of her husband by his first wife on the other, which resulted in the elder branch espousing the cause of Lancaster, and Salisbury and his brothers, that of York.

Children by Margaret Stafford:
Ralph Neville, Knt.
Alice Neville, m. 1st Thomas Gray, Knt.
Philippe Neville, m. Thomas De Dacre, 6th Lord Dacre
Margaret Neville, m. Richard Le Scrope.

Knight of the Garter; active on the border with Scotish affairs; strong supporter of Henry IV; life tenant of the Honor of Richmond after 1399; took no part in the French wars of Henry V but was one of his executors and a member of the Council of Regency for Henry VI;

father of 23 children by two wives.

1st Earl of Westmoreland: "And having wedded two Wives, viz. Margaret, Daughter of Hugh, Earl Stafford (for which Marriage, a special Dispensation from Pope Urban the Fifth was obtained, in regard they were within the third and fourth degrees of Consanguinity) who dying 9 Junii, An. 1370. (44 Edw. 3.) was buried in the Quire at Brancepath;) and Joane, the Daughter of John of Gant, Duke of Lancaster, Widow of Sir Robert Ferrers (of Overley) Knight (who died 13 Nov. 19 Hen.6.) and was buried at Lincoln) departed this life in 21 Octob.4 Hen. 6. (and lieth buried in the midst of the Quire at Staindripe, under a stately tomb, whereon are the Figures of himself, and both his wives)

Josie, I found proof at the public library of the line from Brian de Stapleton and Agnes St. Phillbert (sp?) on back. The de Stapleton line listed all the sons for centuries, but not a single daughter. So, what has to be proved is the Thornton line, which might be fairly easy if we look in the right place. They all seemed to have been born, lived and died in Thornton, England. I can tell you the names of the books which provided the proof. Next time I go I will take the time to get all the info off the fly leafs. Emelia
