Notes

Robert Ier le Vaillant d'ARTOIS

"The citadel of Calais stood on the marshes of Artois. Its first Count Robert of Artois, son of Henry VIII of France, was killed at Mansoureh, Egypt whilst on Crusade with his brother St. Louis IX in 1250. Robert I's daughter Blanche (d. at Vincennes in May 1302) married first Henry, Count of Champagne and king of Navarre (1270-4) and then Edmund, earl of Lancaster, King Henry III of England's brother. Blanche and Edmund were parents of Henry of Lancaster (d. 1345) and his brother, Thomas, earl of Lancaster (executed 1322). Blanche's great grand daughter, Blanche of Lancaster, was wife of John of Gaunt."

"Calais (now in canton Pas de Calais, arrondissement Boulogne in France) was enclosed by a double wall and wet ditches, contained four castles or bastides and had a harbour protected on the west side by an arm of the sea, crossed by the Newland, Neuillet or Nieuley bridge defended by a castle but was blocked off by the English admiral of the south, John Montgomery. The French archers and men-at-arms were under John de Vienne of Burgundy who left 17,000 old men, women and children of Calais to starve between the two armies. Edward on the other hand, allowed them to pass, giving them food but later more people were thrown out of Calais to starve and die. In February 1347, Edward summoned the earl of Lancaster and the Irish and English lords to him and a new commission of array was issued on the English and Welsh lands. The king aided the Duchess of Brittany who was his ally, by sending John de Hardeshull and Sir Thomas Dagworth against Charles of Blois whom the English forces defeated but Sir Thomas was killed in 1350. On 14th May the king summoned to his aid the bannerets and earls who were in England (including John de Molines and Guy de Brian) and purchased.

The inhabitants of Calais were desperate, they were starvcng and compelled to eat cats and dogs. On 4.8.1346 Eustace St. Pierre, one of the richest burghers of Calais surrendered with 5 others to the king. According to legend, Queen Phillipa knelt before the king and pleaded for the lives of the burghers of Calais. They were treated kindly but had to evacuate the town except for 22 wealthy burghers. A proclamation was made in London and throughout the rest of England inviting colonist to come there.

When Calais surrendered, Sir Walter de Manny and his two marshals, the earls of Warwick and Stafford, took possession of the town and re-populated it with Englishmen.

On 28.9.1348 Philip of France signed a truce. Edward appointed a captain and a marshal to hold Calais and returned to England on 12.10.1346. The conquest of Calais gave the English command of the narrow seas, protected shipping and was vital to English trade and commercial security.

n 1349 Geoffrey de Charny, captain of St. Omer, attempted to recapture Calais by stealth. He gave Amerigo de Pavia, an Italian mercenary in command of the English royal ships, a bribe of by 20,000 gold crowns to betray the fort but Pavia informed Edward who came to Calais with his son and troops. Charny paid Amerigo and the French troops were admitted into the castle and taken prisoner. The next day (1.1.1350) the English marched out to attack the rest of the French army, whose retreat was cut off by a contingent of archers who secured the Nieuley Bridge. In accordance with the rules of chivalry, Edward then gave a feast when the captives were attended by their captors.

Calais remained in English hands for 200 years until the Tudors reduced the garrison there because they were more interested in filling their own purses. Calais was finally taken by the French on 5.1.1558/9 by the Duke of Guise in the reign of Mary Tudor who said its loss was engraved on her heart until the day she died." [S3780]
