Notes

Many of the people who pushed into the Mississippi area between 1790 and 1800 were recipients of bounty land from service in the Revolutionary War. The U.S. was trying to acquire West Florida (Mississippi, Alabama, and west Florida) from Spain, so by sending American citizens there to claim the land was one way for the U.S, government to lay claim to the territory. The West Florida papers at LSU in Baton Rouge contains records of land granted by the Spanish government to settlers in West Florida.

Benjamin, Jr. left several minor children, among them Mary Higginbotham who was placed in custody Francis and Dolly. About 1810 they moved to Feliciana Parish, LA and settled around Clinton, Wilson, and Jackson. At that time Feliciana was one large parish with St. Francisville as the parish seat.

Many probate records concerning their estate are recorded there.
