  2. +Jack Swartz LINDSAY II
  3. +Josephine Estelle LINDSAY

Notes

Jack loved to play baseball and loved to hunt. He was remarkable with training bird dogs. Joe Doggie, a Luellen Setter, was a hunter and a super pet.

He was a Foundry Supervisor in the Brewster Company at Shreveport, LA.
My father invented a type of drill bit, and a friend, Jack Haliburton, urged him to go in business with him, but my father decided to stay with the Brewster Co., and they patented his invention.

My father became severely depressed and was hospitalized in the Willis Knighton Hospital on the Greenwood Rd in Shreveport, LA. Once when we lived in Vivian, and again when we lived at 312 Columbia St in Shreveport (Highland Section) . Times got very tough for my father as the Brewster Co. quit paying him sick leave. He hated my mama working. She had a job at the Big Chain Cafeteria in the delicatessen. He had sold his car, and used to ride a bike to his friends house (the Beddingfields) on Creswell Ave and play bridge. One morning he shot himself in the chest with his shotgun while mama was preparing to go to work. I had just called time as she was worried about being late. I heard the blast and opened the door. There was deep red blood on my fathers chest, Mama quickly shut the door. I found my brother crying on the back porch, he had heard the blast, and knew what had happened. Many times he told me how guilty he felt because he and daddy had a confrontation the night before. I don't remember much after that. We went to Vivian where a large Wake was held at my Aunt Stell's home. I stayed at Aunt Cloie's. There was some problem about what I would wear. At the cemetery we sat in chairs on the front row. I remember feeling that my father was not in that hole - he was not there.

Three Corners is a place where Texas, Arkansas, & Louisiana join. Dan McCants once told me a story about when my father took him there. Daddy would take me sometimes on his field trips over red clay roads to oil well derricks. It was very exciting to me. At that time the Brewster Co. had a warehouse at Rodessa, between Vivian and Texarkana, and he worked out of there. Once a terrible tornado struck and destroyed the building killing one man working there.

Daddy loved to listen to the baseball games on the radio. We walked on eggshells so as not to disturb him, he really got into the game. Sometimes he would take us to Caddo Lake swimming hole. We had huge truck inner tubes to float on, and Joe Doggie loved to swim with us. Unfortunately after Dad died, mother loaned "Joe Doggie" to her boss, Capt. Orville Richardson, who took him on a hunt, he died of a heart attack that night. We never saw him after he left that day with Capt. Richardson, we were not taken to the site where he died and do not know where he was buried. Borther Jack and I were devastated.

Dad was quite remarkable with a baseball-and did a lot of fancy catching and throwing. He played football in high school and stayed an extra year to play on the team. Dad had a baseball contract for a $100 per month in 1927. Mama made daddy quit baseball because the crowd and the game was rough. See the movie Ty Cobb and you will have a pretty good idea of how Baseball was at that time. Texarkana, AR and Shreveport, LA were main railroad thoroughfares, and many baseball talent scouts were in the area.

Dad's uncle, Harry Swartz (Brewster), owned a hotel across from the train station on Louisiana Ave. where all the baseball folks stayed. My mother lived just down the block. They met one day while mama and her sister, Nada were out for a walk. Mama and Nada were on the basketball team in high school and loved to play. Mama and Dad used to play basketball together when we were babies.

*Transcription of John Shell's Will received from Elsie Wright, 6/1999. Transcription errors have been preserved. Notable among these are the spelling of Edmond Shell's name as Edmund and an obvious problem with the dates of recording and proof (see note below).
Dan Shell, 1999

(I think the date for the will being proved should be 1819 not 1818, otherwise it was proved before it was recorded. ELW).
