Notes

2 Thomas Berry b: JUL 1733 d: 18 DEC 1818 + Frances Ann Kendall b: 1737 d: 1818.

5. Thomas appears to have been born in Hanover Parish, King George county, after his parents moved from Saint Paul's Parish. He was apprenticed for 5 years to John Gregg, carptenter and house joiner. He married Frances Ann Kendall 1737-1818, daughter of Samuel Jr and Elizabeth Woffendall Kendall.

Thomas and wife Frances had the following children ;
Margaret, who married Colonel Robert Rankin,
Elizabeth, who married Lt. William Calmes,
Winifred,
Joseph, who married Peggy Kercheval,
Jane, married John Kercheval,
Sally who married William Kennan,
William,
Thomas,
Samuel, who marred Sarah Kendall, and
Catherine, who married Joseph Cole

Thomas and Francis moved to Frederick county, Va, and shopped n a store in Winchester, where portions of his accounts are still in existence, an interesting look into everyday life in the 1700s.

Thomas was a company commander during the Revolutionary War, with his company formed in Winchester as part of the 8th Regt of the Virginia Contintinental Line.. The company was present in Philadelphia of 1777, fought at the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and were present at Valley Forge, for the winter stay of '78. After the war Capt Berry again resumed his life in Frederick co, Va, where he died in 1818, and his will was administered in Frederick co, Va and in Mason County, Ky

Garland HURT

1764 - 7 Nov 1839

ID Number: I52615

  • RESIDENCE: William & Russell Cos. VA
  • BIRTH: 1764, St. Stephens Par, King William Co. Virginia
  • DEATH: 7 Nov 1839, Berret's Chapel, Russell Co. Virginia
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1714]
Father: Moses HURT II
Mother: Elizabeth Cocke SHELTON

Family 1 : Martisha THURSTON

Notes

"89-6B46-1789, Pittsylvania County, Va. Garland Hurt, son of Moses Hurt, Jr. and wife, Elizabeth Hurt, married Martisha Thurston, daughter of John Thurston, in Pittsylvania County by bond dated 9-25-1789. Surety was Thomas Shelton.
The following is taken from the papers of Mekin Spencer Hurt II, son of Moses Hurt (8-4-1804--7-31-1865) who was a son of Garland and Martisha Hurt. Mekin S. Hurt was born in the first part of the 1840s and died in Russel County, in 1930 where he lived all of his life.

Garland Hurt and his brother Moses Hurt (d. 1849) moved from Pittsylavania County to Washington County in about 1796. In about 1803, Garland Hurt moved his family to Russell County which borders Washington County on the west. Garland settled with his family at Barret's Chapel on Swords Creek in Russel County and lived there the rest of a long life and died there on Nov. 7, 1839. He married again to Rebecca, (I do not know her family name). There were ten children (The Mekin Hurt papers do not state if any were by his second wife. All were probably by his first wife.) The ten children were as follows:
(1) William Darby Hurt, he was born in the 1790 and died in 1847.
(2) John T. Hurt, he moved to Boone County, Indiana.
(3) Mekin S. Hurt, uncle of Mekin S. Hurt, author of the Mekin Hurt papers.
(4) Absalom Hurt. he signed some papers as Absalom E. Hurt.
(5) Moses Hurt, born 8-4-1804 and died 7-31-1865. He was the father of Mekin Hurt.
(6) Mary Hurt, she married Isaac Johnson.
(7) Elizabeth T. Hurt, she married Martin P. Herndon. They moved to Boone County, Indiana.
(8) James Leslie Hurt, he died young.
(9) Sarah (Sally) Hurt, she married Thomas M. Boger and they moved to West Virginia.
(10) Cynthia A Hurt, she married John Barrett.

The Mekin S. Hurt papers state that Garland Hurt was an officer in the Revolutionary War and his son William Darby was an officer in the War of 1812.

Garland's son, Moses Hurt had his father's war pistol and saber for years but, they were finally lost. "The saber was made of silver, bright as a new silver dollar. The barrel of the pistol was of brass. The whole pistol was about 18 inches long.""
