Notes

CONFLICT in Parents: "Father: Robert HATTON b: ABT 1580 in Claverley, Shropshire, England. Father: John HATTON Mother: Margaret ASTONE.

Coat of Arms for the Richard Hatton family is somewhat blurred, but the chevron is visable on the shield and a breast's head in the crest, is found on the inventory of the personal estate of Hatton Middleton, Prince George's County 1733. It is not the Middleton coat of arms, but it conforms to the Hatton coat of arms of the Irish branch. The Middleton family of Maryland intermarried with the Hatton, of which Hon. Thomas Hatton, secretary of the Province, was the outstanding member. The Hattons of Ireland used: Azure a chevron ermine between three garbs or". Crest: "A demi-griffen proper winged gules holding between the paws and esquire's helmet or". RICHARD's dying request was that his brother, Thomas, should invite his orphaned family, Margarette and the children and their servant, John Perryn, to come to America under his protection, which they did in 1649."

Notes

American State Papers, Public Lands, II, p462:
The claim of the heirs of Joseph Pancake for a militia donation of 100 acres. It is proved that Joseph Pancake was an effective militia man at Vincennes in the year 1786, that he was with and under deponent's (John Small) command in the same year the engagement with the Indians on [the] Embarras [River - in IL just west of Vincennes] engagement, where he was killed.

John Tevebaugh stated in his letter dated 2 Mar 1998 that three children were known to this Joseph: Joseph, Jacob and Dorothy. If I have the correct PANCAKE family below, then perhaps our Catharine is a daughter of John (this would also assume that John died or lived elsewhere since Jacob Pancake is performing the function of father or eldest brother for both Catherine and Dorothy).

More research is needed but wondering if this Joseph is perhaps the son of Andrew and his sibs Isaac and Agnes are in Bartholomew Co., IN: p. 127 Synopsis of Wills
Andrew PANCAKE (Hardy Co.) 10-23-1786; pr. 9-11-1793. W., Elizabeth (pregnant), 8 ch., 1- John, 2-Hannah, 3-Joseph, farm; 4-Agnes, 5-Isaac, 6-Mary, 7-Abraham, 8-George (latter 5 minors). Exec., sons, John and Joseph. Sec., John Pancake, Sr., John Rannels, wit., wife Elizabeth, Thomas Talbot, John Shephard.

The following query was posted on the Knox County, IN Query Forum by Yvonne Hamilton thamilton@classic.msn.com on March 3, 1998:

In 1783 Joseph PANCAKE and his friend, Jacob TEVEBAUGH came to Vincennes to prepare the way for their families to move west. They joined the Militia and when a Peoria Indian raiding party kidnapped a mother and child, they set out with the militia on the rescue. The mother and child were rescued, but Joseph and Jacob died in the fighting. The U.S. Congress granted their children land for their fathers' service. Anyone out there looking for the Pancake family?
