  2.  HENRY d' AUBIGNY Lord of Cambo

Notes

aka: Nigel de Albini. "Matilda, married Nigel d'Aubigny (sometimes spelt d'Albini) whose family came from Saint Martin d'Aubigny, 16 km. west of St-Lo and 15 km. north of Coutances. However, Robert Montbray was the maternal uncle of Nigel and although Nigel inherited Robert's vast landholdings, the marriage was anulled for co-sanguinity before any issue."

By his second wife, Gundred, he had a son and heir Roger whose name was changed
by royal command from d'Aubigny to de Montbray. The family flourished (Baronial Pedigree) and the name spelling evolved to Mowbray.

The baronial line died out in England with a young heiress ca. 1475, although a son of an earlier generation had founded a dynasty in Scotland where issue has survived. The family was active up and down the east side of the country and settled predominantly in the counties of Durham, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire in historic times. Since then there has been the usual migration into other areas and overseas.

As with any name, there are numerous spelling variations over time, but the major ones are MOUBRAY which is the Scottish version and MOWBERRY which stemmed from a Leicestershire migration into Glinton, Northamptonshire where the variant became established and eventually spread into a Lincolnshire branch.

Nigel d'Aubigny (Albini): Nigel's grants were in Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Warwickshire and Leicestershire. He was bow-bearer to the king in the reign of William II (Rufus) and was knighted by Henry I, who gave him the manor of Egmanton with parks in Sherwood Forest, but Nigel passed these on to Robert Davil.

For his valour and military skill, Henry I granted him tenancy of Camvile and Wyvile. This caused Nigel to support to Henry I against his brother Robert Curthose - in the battle of Tenerchebray, Nigel slew the horse of Curthose and brought him to the king. For this, Henry I gave him the lands of Robert, Baron of Frontebeof - Stutevile in England which Robert had fortified for Curthose. Later, Henry I was besieging a castle in Normandy - Sir Nigel captured it for him and was remunerated by a royal grant of the forfeited lands of his maternal uncle Robert de Montbray, Earl of Northumberland - lands both in England and Normandy, including the castle of Bayeaux. As a result Nigel held 120 knight's fees each in Normandy and England, making him one of the most powerful persons of his time.

Nigel married firstly Matilda, (or Maud) daughter of Richard de Aquila, by permission of Pope Paschall, as she was the wife of Robert de Montbray, still alive but imprisoned. This marriage produced no issue and ended in divorce on grounds of co-sanguinity. He married secondly, in 1118, Gundred de Gorney, by special advice of Henry I, and had two sons:-.

Roger, his successor who assumed by command of King Henry the surname of Mowbray. Henry, ancestor of the Albini feudal lords of Camho.

This feudal lord died at an advanced age, and was buried with is ancestor, in the Abbey at Bec, in Normandy. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Roger.
