Sharelio51@aol.com Date: Sun, 3 Mar 2002 Subject: Nancy Burton To: jbass@digital.net
Nancy Burton was the daughter of Decater Burton and Lavinia Johnson. She is listed as being 18 yrs old on the Walker Co. 1860 Census. She is the sister of my gg grandmother Martha Ann Burton. Martha Ann married Warren Jackson Townley. Contact me if you need or have other information. I am guessing from 1860 and 1870 census that Cader's mother and father were John and Elizabeth Burton. They are 68 years old on the 1860 census and Elizabeth is living with Cader on the 1870 census at the age of 70. Sharon

  2. +James William BASS C.S.A.
Family 2 : William WRIGHT

Notes

NOT PROVEN DAUGHTER OF JOSEPH, working on it.

1818 Knox Co., IN Bond document Catherine Bass, widow, Jacob Thorn, Jacob Pancake, and William Bass. Appraisement, sale bill. Will mentions but does not name children. Bills, receipts. 28 pgs.

We are trying to establish the ancestry of Catharine Pancake. She may well be related to her neighbor Jacob Tevebaugh who came to Knox Co from Hardy/Hampshire co., VA cir 1780. A look at the census records of KY are not much help in determining this. Undoubtedly she will be related to Jacob Pancake in her husband's estate settlement, Dorothy Pancake wife of her husband's brother William T. BASS, and Dolly Pancake wife of Solomon Tevebaugh.

We do not know who is the older man on the 1820 Census with Catharine.
Chatharine 110100-00010-0000 Knox 91
The widow Catharine BASS m. William WRIGHT of Pike Co., IN 4 Mar 1825. Catharine lived with her son James as she appears on the 1850 and 1860 census in his household in Dade Co. MO. 1850 Census records state she is born TN while the census of 1860 states NC. We need to find her Will and expecially see if she mentions Small BASS as we cannot find Small after 1860.

Joshua WYNNE b: ABT. 1662 d: ABT. 1715 + Mary JONES

"Attorney, Justice in 1698 (VA), Member of the House of Burgesses (VA)
1702-04; Sheriff of Prince George County 1705-1711
Killed by the Indians in retaliation for the slaying of an Indian, "one of their great men", by a white servant."

"Joshua Wynne was killed by an Indian in retalliation for one of his servants having killed an Indian Chief. One story about Joshua says that in late August 1711 there was an alarm throughout the James River counties. Rumor had it that 15 French was ships were entering the River. The militia officers donned their uniforms, lit their bonfires, leaped on their horses and dashed to Westover for news. Major Wynne had his holster at his girdle and an armor bearer that carried his pistol, which made a good figure, but, the ships were English, and everything seemed quiet again.
Joshua was a Justice in Charles City, Feb 23, 1698, member of the House of Burgess, 1702-04, and Sheriff of Prince George County 1705 and 1711.
Joshua's father's will provided him with a house and Oatmeal Mill in Canterbury, England and two other houses there."

:"Joshua Wynne, youngest son of Colonel Robert Wynne was a Justice in Charles City, February 23, 1698; member of the House of Burgess, 1702-04; and after Prince George was cut off from that County he was Sheriff of Prince George 1705 and 1711. In 1708 Mayor Joshua Wynne and Mary, his wife, deeded a tract of land in Surry.

It is thought that Joshua Wynne was killed by an Indian. When his estate was probated on the 30th March 1715, by his son, Peter Wynne, it showed debts of Ls 283-16-6 Sterling. After his death, Mary Jones Wynne, married William Randolph. (From "Adventures of Purse and Person" p. 364.)"
