THE ANCESTRY OF LUCY GATEWOOD, WIFE OF CAPTAIN THOMAS DEW AND MOTHER OF THOMAS RODERICK DEW, THIRTEENTH PRESIDENT OF WILLIAMAND MARY COLLEGE.By: Lenora Higginbotham Sweeny

"In the time of Oliver Cromwell many Royalists fled from Essex, England, to the Colony of Virginia and settled in Rappahannock County, where John Gatewood was living in Farnham Parish in 1663. The first mention of him in the records is on the thirteenth day of January in that year, when he, with Richard Silvester, witnessed a deed of gift from Thomas Button and Jane his wife, of Button's Range, to Charles Goodrich, son of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Goodrich. It may be that John Gatewood the immigrant to Virginia was a descendant of Richard Gatewood, of High Ongar, Essex, England, whose son, Thomas was christened in Bobbingworth Church 29 th December 1578. John Gatewood married Amy, whose maiden name is unknown, and among thier six sons one was named Richard and another Thomas. The designation "To Have and to Hold," aptly describes his real estate transactions as he appears to have acquired but never to have disposed of the numerous tracts of land of which he is recorded the purchaser except finally devised in his last Will and Testament dated 14 November, 1706, to his wife, Amy and sons, John, Richard, Thomas, Henry, William and James. He also made bequests to his daughters, Frances Shackelford, Amy Burnett, and Sarah Gatewood. His will was proved in Essex County, 10 January, 1706/7 by the witnesses, Joseph Baker and Thomas Wheeler.

His widow, Amy, married secondly prior to 9 May, 1710, Joseph Baker, a wealthy merchant of Tappahannock on theRappahannock in Virginia. In his will dated 20 September 1720 he appoints his " beloved wife Amy " Executrix and her son John Gatewood, Executor. After leaving five pounds Sterling to purchase a Silver Salver " for the use of the upper Church of Southfarnham perish." Essex County, and making bequests to many friends and his sister Ann White, wife of Richard White, of London, "liveing in Cow Lane in West Smithfield with Richard White Cloath maker" and his sister Elizabeth Hart living with them: and "unto Peter Godfrey for his Care & Trouble of me all the Medicines I have sent for to England and best Saddle and bridle". he left the residue of his estate to his wife Amy and the children she had by her deceased husband, John Gatewood. Amy must have been a wonam of lovable character and one who diffused sunshine on the lives of those by whom shewas surrounded in those dark pioneer days in Virginia. Besides a daughter bearing her Christian name four grandchildren and many great-grandchildren bore the name Amy, thus showing the love and devotion the children had for their mother. In her will made 4 April, 1744, and probated in Essex County, Virginia, 18 June, 1745, she named among other legatees her grand-daughters, "Amy", daughter of her son John Gatewood, to whom she left "one Gold Ring", and "Amy", daughter of her son James Gatewood, to whom she bequeathed North Hole plantation. The eldest son of John and Amy Gatewood was born circa 1680, in that part of Rappahannock County which, when the county was divided in 1692 became Essex County. By 1714 he was styled Mr. John Gatewood in the records which indicates that he was a man of standing the title Mr. being sparingly used in the early part of the eighteenth century. In addition to the plantation left him by his father, he accumulated a large estate both by grant and purchase until eventually he became a planter of wealth and prominence. He married Catherine------------- and died in 1750 leaving a widow, ( who died in 1762 ) five sons and three daughters.

John Gatewood, probably the eldest son of John Gatewood, Jr.was a prosperous planter of South Farnham Parish, EssexCounty. He married Frances Cox, born 1711, daughter ofWilliam Cox and wife Frances, widow of John Wood, of Essex County, Virginia.William Cox was a son of Henry Cox, whose will dated 22February, 1674 and proved 2 November, 1675, names as Executorand Executrix "father-in-law Mr. William Strachey of Gloster County and Arabella my now wife;" son William Cox and " child my wife now goeth with." Henry Cox was a son of WilliamCox, brother of John Cox whose will dated "9th day of November in the year of our Lord 1669" and recorded in Essex County, Virginia, 10 February, 1695, constitutes andordains "my well-beloved kinsman, Henry Cox, the sonne of my brother, William Cox, and now present in Virginia, my sole (executor ) of this my last Will and Testament."John Gatewood and Frances his wife had five children who are named in the will of their grandfather, William Cox, dated 21April, 1753; probated in Essex County, 19 March, 1754, and recorded in Will Book No. 9, page 291. He makes bequests to daughter Frances Gatewood, son-in-law John Gatewood and five grandchildren, Catherine, John, Philip, Chaney and Matthew Gatewood. Catherine and John were named for their paternal grandparents and Philip for his uncle Philip Gatewood, who served in Captain Peter Hog's Company of the First Virginia Regiment commanded by Colenel George Washington, and was in the Battle of Great Meadows. Washington, in his diary, praises him as a "brave Indian fighter." The youngest son Matthew who died in infancy, was named for his mother's favorite brother, Matthew Cox, who also served in the Indian Wars. The name Chaney came to the Gatewood family through this inter-marriage. The surname of Frances Cox's mother was most likely Chaney. A John Cheyney was living in Rappahannock County, Virginia, in 1659.

Chaney Gatewood, born prior to 1743, married Elizabeth Leaman. He sold the Mansion House and plantation bequeathed him by his father's will drawn 11 September, 1762, and removed with his family to Drysdale Parish, King & Queen County, where they were living at the beginning of the year 1777. Owing to the destruction of the records of the records of King and Queen County very little information can be gleaned regarding Chaney Gatewood. He is recorded in 1782 as having paid taxes on 866 acres of land and in 1785 he increased his holdings by purchasing land from James Gardner. On June20, 1788 he, with Thomas Dew and others subscribed to a fund for repairing the Meeting House of the Baptist Church of Christ,Upper King & Queen County. That he was one of the leading figures in his community is evident from the fact that in 1794 he was recommended for a Justice of the Peace. They had at least one child, Lucy Gatewood, born March 24,1776, who married, June 7, 1793, Thomas Dew, of Dewsville, King & Queen County. He was born in Maryland, May 28, 1763, the son of William Dew, a descendant of Andrew Dew, who leased land in Rappahannock County, Virginia, from Clement Herbert, Gent, of said county, 16 December, 1660, for which he "obliged himself to plant an orchard of 300 apple trees upon said land and leave the said land tenable & to plant and seat upon said land by the 10th October next ensuing." He died early in the year1661, leaving a widow, Ann and two sons, Andrew and ThomasDew. His widow married, secondly, James Toone, and thirdly, Dominick Rice. In 1683, her son, Andrew Dew, "for love and affection" conveyed to his brother Thomas, the land taken up by " our father Andrew Dew deceased lying in the freshes of Rappahannock and made over to me by deed from my father in Law ( stepfather ) Mr. Dominick Rice."

As a lad Thomas Dew served in the Revolutionary War and was at Gates' Defeat and in the Battle of Guilford Court House. He was Captain of a Company in the War of 1812. He died April 23,1849. His widow, Mrs. Lucy ( Gatewood ) Dew deceased on the17th November, 1859, having survived him more than ten years. "Across the fields from Dewsville" they are sleeping their last sleep while their descendants, prominent in many walks of life are scattered far and wide.To Captian Thomas and Lucy ( Gatewood ) Dew were born ten children.
