"Came to Shenandoah Valley before 1769. 11 April 1769 "put upon his trials" by Presbyterian Church. 30 Aug 1769 licensed to preach at Old Tuscarora Presbyterian Church of northern VA. Oct. 1770 appointed to preach at Back Creek and Falling Waters Churches. Back Creek Valley lies between the Little and Big North Mountains in western part of Berkeley and Frederick Co. VA. Falling Waters was 7 miles N. and 3 miles E. of Martinsburg, VA near a ford into the Shenandoah Valley.
21 Aug 1771 ordained to full work of ministry and installed as pastor of Tuscarora and Falling Waters Churches.
In 1773 he made a trip across the Alleghanies "in the interest of the church".. He was married 02 Feb 1773 in Franklin Co. PA to Elizabeth Park. In 1775 Hugh and Elizabeth lived at the foot of the North Mountain. Hugh "partakes of the VA spirits and hands around the sociable bowl."
Berkeley Co. Deed Book 3, p. 359 Martinsburg, Berkeley Co. W. VA
"1775-indenture between Thomas McCoy and Hugh Vance Witnesseth that the said Thomas McCoy for and in Consideration of the Sum of 5 shillings paid by Hugh Vance ----sell to Hugh Vance all that tract Parcel of Land situate lying and being on Dry Run in the said Co. containing 99 acres"
Sept 1791, "he was a tall, spare man, very weakly, on the borders of the grave". He had "consumption".
Will of Hugh Vance, copied from book of Wills in Martinsburg,
WVA: 17 Jan 1792, Devisees: Elizabeth (wife), John, James
(sons), Sarah, Polly, Elizabeth, Nancy, Mary (daughters) and
others. (note: had daughters named Nancy and Mary)
Berkeley Co. Deed Book 20, Page 324, Martinsburg, Berkeley Co.,
WVA: On 26 Oct 1807, Elizabeth Vance, widow of Hugh Vance, David
Hanna and Nancy his wife, George Harlan & Sarah his Wife, Betsy
Vance and James & their heirs all in consideration of the sum of
eleven hundred and Eighty Pounds Current Money of PA to be paid
by Matthew Ransome granted bargained & sold a Certain Piece
Parcel or Tract of Land Situate lying and being in the said
County of Berkeley near Martinsburg on Dry Run Containing One
hundred & eighteen acres & thirty three square poles of Land and
all houses Orchards ways waters Water Courses which they had
inherited from the estate of Hugh Vance. (Note: I don't
understand this "David Hanna and Nancy his wife" because David
married Margaret "Peggy" Smith in Champaign Co. OH, 07 May
