From Julia Adler's Family by Julia Adler on Gencircles.com
"Thomas East Sr [1556], born perhaps by the 1640s, lived in Henrico Co VA to at least 1668. On 20 August of 1672 a Thomas Cocke confirmed in writing that he, Cocke, had made an oral agreement with Thomas East about four years prior in Henrico Co whereby East, in consideration of a nominal rent "of one Ear of Corn" payable on Christmas Day each year , was to lease a parcel of land from Cocke for twenty years , with the option of purchase at the end of the lease. It appears that Cocke and East came to some disagreement in 1691 over this lease-purchase agreement. In 1693 Cocke advertised for an overseer to take care of the disputed land, plus other land in Charles City Co.(Thomas COCKE, dec'd by 1707)

Thomas East was listed on the 2 June 1679 Henrico Co VA tax list, living on Turkey Island Creek(Turkey Island is proximal to the Curles Plantation of John Woodson el al.) on the James River, Henrico, VA)

He was a witness on 28 September 1681 to a land sale between William Porter and Robert Woodson.

Thomas East Sr, Thomas East, and Edward East were named on a "True and Perfect Rent Roll of all the Lands held of her Maj'tie in Henrico Co, April 1705." The land they were renting was 475 acres, 554 acres, and 150 acres respectively . Thomas had at least two sons-

a. Thomas East Jr, b c1667
b. Edward East Sr, b c1670

THOMAS EAST was born in 1640 in England. He was one of those Englishmen that made that trip across the sea and was one of the Colonists to settle America. The ships were ninety feet long. It was very crowded because there were a lot of people on the ship. There were also other problems such as people getting seasick, the overcrowding, the bad smell on board, no way to wash and the length of the trip. The trip lasted sixty-five days. On the ship they ate hard biscuits and dried meat. Most of the other food soon spoiled. After the water was gone they drank beer. They could not cook very much because of rough seas. There was a babies born on the trips. The people were tired and bored. All the children had to keep them busy were games. Many of the games were loud and disturbing like knuckle bones, a game we call jacks. They also had seek and find, which we would call hide and seek. Checkers, jumping rope, log fight, stool ball, clay marbles and hop scotch were played. There were also games less disturbing and quieter such as cat's cradle and making a bracelet. All they could take on the trip was a bible and a trunk containing their belongings. If someone had a baby they could bring a cradle. The men could bring a gun. Some of the passengers and sailors slept on deck in hammocks. Most of the other passengers slept below deck.

Everyone agreed to have equal and fair laws. The women did not take part in the elections because they were not allowed to vote. Some of the people would sleep in a loft. The children would sleep on a trundle bed, which was a bed that rolled from underneath a larger bed. Thomas had married Winifred Hudnate in England. It's not known at this time if she died in England or on the trip to Virginia but, she did die at age 21 and never bearing children to Thomas.

After her death he met and married Dorothy Thomas in Virginia.( He left a will.) Dorothy Thomas died at about age 62. THOMAS died January 1725/26 around the age of 86 in Henrico, Virginia. He left a will. will dated 1725.

Mss1M3855a, Massie Family Papers, 1698-1875,
Nelson County, Virginia
Description
This collection consists of 5,634 items, arranged in sections by name of individual and type of document.
Section 1 consists of ten items, letters written by Bowler Cocke of Turkey Island, Henrico County, Virginia, to Thomas Massie(1747-1834) of Frederick [now Clarke], Amherst, and Nelson counties, Virginia.

Thomas East Sr. left two original wills. In one, Mavil has been written over to look like Mary but you can still see the dot for the I. Thomas did not marry Dorothy until 1685/86 so she could not be mother of his children. Thomas Jr . later tried to sell the land that his father had granted Mavil, claiming that she only had a life's interest in the land and that since she was deceased, the land reverted to him as the oldest son. John Robinson Jr. went to court and retained the land(1737) . In later deeds, many of the children of Mavil are named . Joanna A. Baker

The information I have is that Mary East married William Alsop, who died in 1710 (probably in Hanover County, Va). I am descended from one of William and Mary's children, also named William (1690-1788), through his son John Alsop + Jury a Potter. The William who married Mary appears to have been one of three sons of Benjamin Alsop, believed to have been an indentured servant who arrived in Virginia in the 1600s. The indenture was to pay passage for himself and his sons.

Unfortunately, my documentation for this is somewhat scarce as I received the information from another Alsop researcher (who is quite thorough, but did not pass on his notes) . The descendants from William to John Alsop, to me, is pretty well documented. John was a Revolutionary War veteran who settled in Whitley County, Kentucky, and many of his descendants still live there. My grandmother was born there as well. The ascendancy from William to William Alsop + Mary East gets murky... Phil Eaton"

Robert LINDSAY

ABT 1720 - 1801

ID Number: I61812

  • RESIDENCE: VA and by 1744 Guildford Co. NC
  • BIRTH: ABT 1720
  • DEATH: 1801, Guilford Co. North Carolina
  • RESOURCES: See: Notes [S2315] [S3708]
Father: John LINDSAY

Family 1 : Nancy Ann MCGEE
  1.  William LINDSAY

Notes

The Lindsay and McGee families were Scots Irish Presbyterians, and early settlers of the Guilford/Randolph County area in NC. When Guilford County was formed in 1771, the county court met at the home of Robert Lindsay for the first four years of its existence.

Lindsay Code No.: L0026 Group 1
Surname: Lindsay
Earliest Known Progenitor: Robert Lindsay b. 1740, d. 1801 Guilford County, North Carolina, married Nancy (Ann) McGee (2nd wife) June 23, 1772. Robert Lindsay is thought to have come to the Guilford County area of North Carolina circa 1763. Although it has not been proven, this Robert Lindsay is thought to be descended from the Lindsays of Northumberland County and Fairfax County, Virginia, based on strong circumstantial evidence.

Msg Philip Lindsey galloglas@pars.net Date: 2002/06/24
"I have a great deal of information on Guilford and Rockingham County, NC Lindsays. From what I have been able to determine so far, there are not one, but three, different lines in Guilford.
Robert and Nancy McGee had four sons; Samuel, Andrew, William and Robert. Robert, Jr. had three sons who sired (at least) eighteen grandchildren between them. I have also identified one son of William's and two of Samuel's. So the Robert Lindsay/Nancy McGee line should have some great likelihood of male heirs. However, I don't think I have ever seen any participate on the Lindsay list.

There is a will listed in Guilford County, dated 1780, of one John McCall of York county, PA. who leaves a 100 pds to " friend John Lindsay, Sr." in addition to this: "to Cousin Robert Lindsay, my land and adjacent ferry in York and Lancaster Counties, known as Nelson's Ferry in deed from my brother Mathy McCall."

This has always caused me some confusion as to the relationship of this John, Sr. and this Robert Lindsay.
